OXFORD, Ohio -- Down to its last out and staring down a perfect game being thrown against them, the Miami University softball team nearly rallied back, but ultimately fell, 2-1, to Ohio on Friday. The RedHawks fall to 25-18 overall and 10-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bobcats improve to 27-19 overall and 8-7 in the MAC.
Senior pitcher Amber Logemann kept Ohio at bay the majority of the game, allowing only a single run in the top of the fourth off three hits and one run in the top of the seventh off a walk and a double. She allowed two runs on only five hits in seven innings pitched in taking a tough-luck loss.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats' Savannah Jo Dorsey showed why she is leading the nation in strikeouts, punching out 13 RedHawks, while retiring the first 20 batters in a row she faced.
Down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh, Miami did not give up. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey recorded the `Hawks first hit of the game when she sent a Dorsey pitch over the centerfield wall to cut the deficit to 2-1. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl followed with a double over the leftfielder's head. She was replaced by a pinch-runner, freshman Chloe Melanson. A wild pitch moved Melanson to third. Junior catcher Lauren Anderson followed with a drive to left center that looked like it might drop, but the Ohio centerfielder made a nice catch to end the game and secure the victory for the Bobcats.
Shuey's home run gave her 40 RBIs on the season. She is only the second player in Miami history to record 40 RBIs in one year. Bre Robinson holds the record with 51 in 2008.
The RedHawks and Bobcats conclude their weekend series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. In between the two games, Miami will hold its annual Senior Day ceremony, where Tanya Busby, Hailey Reed, Logemann and Shuey will be honored.
