RICHMOND, Ky. -- The Miami University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday. The Colonels took the opener, 5-3, and earned an 8-2 victory in the nightcap. The RedHawks fall to 25-17, while EKU improves to 31-10.
Eastern Kentucky got all of its runs in the opening game in the bottom of the second. The Colonels loaded the bases with one out. A hit batter forced in a run to put the Colonels on the board. Krislyn Campos then hit a grand slam home run to give them a 5-0 lead.
Miami got three right back in the top of the third with one swing of the bat. Freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman led off with a single through the left side. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey drew a walk. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl then blasted a shot to deep centerfield, her sixth home run of the season that pulled the `Hawks to within two at 5-3.
Senior pitcher Amber Logemann recovered from that second inning to shut down EKU the remainder of the away, allowing only one more hit over the final four innings. Unfortunately the RedHawks were unable to bring another run home, allowing the Colonels to take the victory. Logemann allowed five runs on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
Wahl finished the opener 3-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Schlattman was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
EKU hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead in the nightcap. Miami fought right back with two runs of its own in the top of the third. Junior second baseman Eryn McCarver led off with a double down the leftfield line. Schlattman then singled her home. A sacrifice bunt by freshman designated player Hannah Girlie moved Schlattman to second, while a single from Shuey moved her to third. Schlattman came home and tied the score when Wahl singled to centerfield.
The Colonels broke the tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. They put the contest away with two runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth.
Schlattman finished the nightcap 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Wahl was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
