BUFFALO, N.Y. - A relentless effort by the RedHawks helped lead them past Buffalo, 3-0, on Saturday, giving Miami their second straight shutout win over the Bulls. The victory moves the Red & White to 18-16 on the year, including a 8-3 record in the MAC.
After a pitcher's duel through the first six innings, Miami was the team to finally crack the scoreboard in the top of the seventh. With two down, Chad Sedio kept the frame alive by tripling to the gap in right center. Then, Tyler Harris singled through the left side, plating Sedio. Dallas Hall kept the two out rally going by doubling to left center, which advanced Harris to third. Hayden Senger then worked a walk which ended with a wild pitch that allowed Harris to come in from third to score. On the same play, a throwing error on the UB catcher allowed Hall to hustle home. After six and a half, the Red & White had a 3-0 lead.
The RedHawks' starting pitcher, Cole Gnetz, was excellent on the mound yet again. The freshman went 5.2 scoreless innings, fanning four UB hitters. He also allowed just three hits. Nick Ernst (W, 2-0) came on in relief of Gnetz and tossed 2.1 innings, surrendering just one hit while striking out a career-high six. Ryan Markse came on in the ninth to seal the win. The lefty collected two punchouts and then got a pop-up to collect his sixth save of 2016.
Miami and Buffalo wrap-up their three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Left-handed pitcher Zach Spears is slated to get the start on the hill for the 'Hawks.
