BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Miami University baseball team was firing on all cylinders as they cruised to a 6-0 win over Buffalo Friday afternoon. The victory improves the Red & White's record to 17-16 on the year, including a solid 7-3 mark in Mid-American Conference play.
Neither team got much going in their first couple at bats but it was Miami who got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third. Hayden Sengner and Jake Romano started off the frame by reaching on a hit by pitch and a walk, respectively. Then, Steve Sada put down a sac bunt to move both of the runners into scoring position. The small ball paid dividends as Adam Yack lined a ball to center that was deep enough to score Senger from third on a sac fly.
The duo of Yacek and Senger teamed up again in the top of the fifth. Yacek hit another sac fly to center and Senger coasted in to make it 2-0 after four and a half.
Gary Russo gave the Red & White a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth when he led off the frame with a solo shot over the left field wall, his 12th home run of 2016.
The RedHawks put up a run for the third-straight inning in the top of the seventh. Sada kicked the inning off with a single up the middle and then stole second. After Yacek moved him over to third on a groundout, Ross Haffey ripped a single to left that allowed Sada to touch home, making it a 4-0 MU lead.
Miami kept the momentum going in the away half of the eighth. Back-to-back singles by Tyler Harris and Dallas Hall put runners on the corners for Miami with no out. Then, Senger laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that allowed Harris to score. After Romano was hit by a pitch and Sada reached on a fielder's choice, Yacek singled to right, scoring Hall. Through seven and a half, The RedHawks possessed a 6-0 advantage.
Miami starting pitcher Gus Graham (W, 3-2) turned in yet another outstanding performance. The sophomore righty went 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. He walked only two while striking out three. The RedHawks' lone reliever to appear Friday, Shane Smith, threw the final 3.2 innings, surrendering just two hits while walking one and striking out two.
The 'Hawks and Bulls get back at it at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Right-handed pitcher Cole Gnetz is scheduled to take the mound for Miami.
