TOLEDO, Ohio -- After taking over six hours to complete the doubleheader, the Miami University softball team earned a split on the road against Toledo Friday afternoon. The RedHawks came from behind to take a 6-5 win in 10 innings in the opener. With the wind blowing out, both teams' offenses came alive in the nightcap with the Rockets taking a 13-10 win. Miami is now 19-13 on the season and 4-1 in the Mid-American Conference. Toledo is 6-24 overall and 1-4 in the MAC.
The opener began as a pitcher's duel between RedHawk senior Amber Logemann and the Rockets' Marla Gooding. Toledo got a two-out two-run home run off of Logemann in the bottom of the first inning, but both pitchers threw up scoreless frames from there until the fifth.
Miami finally broke through on Gooding when senior outfielder Hailey Reed led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run. The Rockets answered with what seemed to be an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when a solo home run put them in front, 3-1.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore third baseman Kat Lee led off with a single to left center. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gliha came up to pinch-hit and promptly doubled to centerfield, moving Lee to third. After an out was recorded, a double to right center by freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman scored both runners to tie the game at three and send it to extra innings.
Miami went in order in the top of the eighth. Toledo was able to load the bases with only one out in the bottom half of the frame, but a grounder to Lee was sent home to sophomore catcher Rylee Whispel for the force out. She relayed the ball to Schlattman at third for the double play that got the `Hawks out of the threat.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Schlattman doubled to right center. Junior second baseman Eryn McCarver then gave Miami its first lead of the game when a single through the right side scored her. That lead would be short lived as another solo home from UT tied the score at four and extended the game for another inning.
In the top of the 10th, freshman outfielder Anna Geary singled to the shortstop with one out. Lee then followed with her third home run of the season, a two-run shot that put Miami back on top, 6-4.
After Logemann retired the first two Rockets in the bottom of the 10th, three straight hits brought home a run and made it a 6-5 ballgame. Toledo was able to load the bases with two outs, but Logemann induced a groundout right back to her for the final out to secure the victory.
Schlattman finished the opener 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored, while Lee was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Logemann picked up the victory, tying a career-high with 10.0 innings pitched. She allowed three earned runs on nine hits, striking out seven.
It was apparently early on that both offenses were going to score a lot in the nightcap. Toledo recorded single runs in the first and second to build an early 2-0 lead.
Miami got its offense going with four runs in the top of the third. With Lee and junior outfielder Jenna Jones on base, Schlattman blasted her ninth home run of the year, a three-run shot that put the Red and White in front. After an out was recorded, senior outfielder Taylor Shuey followed with a home run of her own, a solo blast that gave the RedHawks a 4-2 advantage.
The Rockets retied the score at four with two in the bottom of the third, but Miami seemingly took control of the game with five runs in the top of the fourth. With two runners on, a single from Lee loaded the bases with no one out. Gliha reached on a fielder's choice, as Toledo chose to retire the runner at third, while senior Tanya Busby scored. A sacrifice bunt by Jones moved the runners up to second and third with two outs. Schlattman then was intentionally walked to load the bases. Another walk, this time to McCarver, forced home Lee and made it 6-4. Shuey followed by clearing the bases with a three-RBI double to right center to give Miami a 9-4 advantage.
Toledo continued its offense explosion in the bottom of the fourth, answering right back with six runs on four hits and an error to take a 10-9 lead.
Reed hit her second home run of the day, a solo shot in the top of the fifth that would tie the score at 10. That would be the last run the RedHawks were able to score, as Gooding reentered the contest and was able to shut down their attack. The Rockets retook the advantage with one run in the bottom of the fifth and scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to finish off the 13-10 victory.
Shuey finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Schlattman was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Reed was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
The RedHawks will complete their series against the Rockets on Saturday with a single game. Due to inclement weather in the forecast, that contest will begin at noon. It will air live on ESPN3.
