OXFORD, Ohio - Adam Yacek's three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth helped give the Miami University baseball team a 7-3 win over Dayton on Wednesday evening at McKie Field. The victory improves the RedHawks' record to 10-13 on the year.
The Red & White got on the scoreboard early, scoring in their first opportunity at the plate. Steve Sada walked to lead things off and then Tyler Harris got hit by a pitch. With two now on, Ross Haffey singled to left center, plating Sada. Then, Gary Russo launched a sac fly to right that allowed Harris to come home. After a Chad Sedio single through the right side, Adam Yacek grounded out but it allowed Haffey to score. After one inning, the RedHawks held a 3-0 lead.
Dayton responded in the top of the second, plating one on a single up the middle. After one and a half, Miami led 3-1.
The Flyers knotted things up in the top half of the fourth, striking for two on a single through the left side.
Miami moved ahead for good in the home half of the fifth when Adam Yacek belted his first home run of the year over the left field wall. That gave the 'Hawks a 6-3 edge after five frames. Miami added one more run in the sixth as Harris scored on a wild pitch. After six, the Red & White had a 7-3 advantage.
Brad Schwartz got the start on the hill for Miami. The junior went four innings, allowing three runs while striking three and walking none. Appearing in relief and picking up the win was Shane Smith, who tossed two innings of no hit, scoreless ball. Also pitching for the 'Hawks Wednesday was Bailey Martin and Nick Ernst. Martin threw two innings, surrendering just one hit and zero runs. Ernst picked up the save for Miami, his second of the season. He pitched the ninth, striking out the side.
The Red & White now ready-up for their first road MAC series of 2016 as they head to Northern Illinois.
