OXFORD, Ohio - Another pro career is beginning for a Miami hockey player as team captain Sean Kuraly (Dublin, Ohio/Indiana (USHL)) has signed an entry level contract with the NHL's Boston Bruins for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.
Kuraly, who was a fifth-round pick (133rd overall) of the San Jose Sharks in the 2011 draft, had his rights traded to the Bruins last summer. He is expected to report to Boston's American Hockey League affiliate in Providence.
During his four-year career at Miami, Kuraly played in 154 of a possible 156 games and finished with 93 points on 43 goals and 50 assists. The Dublin, Ohio native also notched at least 23 points in each of his final three collegiate seasons and helped Miami win the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season title during his 2012-13 freshman campaign, which included a trip to the NCAA Midwest Regional finals. He also served as an alternate captain during a breakout junior campaign that saw him net a career-high 19 goals and set a school record with nine game-winning goals as the RedHawks captured the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff to earn a No. 1 seed to the NCAA Tournament.
In addition to his offensive exploits, Kuraly's two-way play caught the notice of the rest of the league as he was named the NCHC's Defensive Forward of the Year this season. He was also an All-NCHC Honorable Mention pick after putting up 23 points on six goals and a team-high 17 assists along with a career-high +5 rating. His 429 faceoff wins and 56.3 percentage from the dot both ranked second in the NCHC and his disciplined play helped the RedHawks finish second in the country on the penalty kill with a 90.9 percent kill rate.
Kuraly is the fourth Miami senior to ink a pro contract since the season ended. Chris Joyaux signed an Amateur Tryout agreement with the AHL's St. John's IceCaps while Matthew Caito (Toledo Walleye) and Kevin Morris (Manchester Monarchs) all signed with East Coast Hockey League squads.
