OXFORD, Ohio -- The Miami University softball team completed its spectacular start to Mid-American Conference play by winning both games of the doubleheader against Ball State on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep. The RedHawks have won seven games in a row and are now 17-11 overall and 3-0 in the MAC. The Cardinals are 14-18 overall and 0-3 in the MAC.

The opener started off with a freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl power display. After junior second baseman Eryn McCarver reached on a single to left center, Wahl blasted her third home run of the year over the centerfield wall to give Miami a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

The RedHawks completed their scoring with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior outfielder Jenna Jones led off with a walk. A sacrifice bunt by freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman moved her over to second. A single to left by McCarver moved Jones to third. On the throw, McCarver took second. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey singled to leftfield to score Jones. After the second out was recorded, a single up the middle by junior catcher Lauren Anderson brought home McCarver and Shuey to give MU a 5-0 advantage.

Junior pitcher Carly Mortensen kept the Ball State offense at bay for the first four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals used three hits to score two runs and pull within three at 5-2.

Senior pitcher Amber Logemann came into the game in the sixth and set BSU down in order in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, the Cardinals got a walk and a couple of hits to score a run, but Logemann got a final popup to earn her third save of the season in securing the 5-3 win.

Wahl finished the opener 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Anderson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Mortensen earned her fourth victory of the season, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings of work.

Miami struck first in the nightcap when Shuey hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first. The `Hawks made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second when sophomore catcher Rylee Whispel's sacrifice fly brought home senior outfielder Hailey Reed.

The Cardinals scored two runs in the top of the third to tie the score. The RedHawks fought right back in the bottom half of the inning when Reed doubled home Wahl to make it 3-2.

Miami completed its scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Whispel led off with a single up the middle and was replaced by a pinch-runner, senior Tanya Busby. Schlattman singled to right center allowed her to move second. A bunt single from McCarver and a throwing error by the Ball State third baseman scored and made it 4-2. A fielder's choice groundout by Shuey scored Schlattman and put the `Hawks on top, 5-2.

Logemann came into the game in the top of the fourth and kept the Cardinals off the board the rest of the way. She allowed only three hits in 4.0 innings pitched in picking up her 10th victory of the season. Schlattman finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with one run scored. McCarver also was 3-for-4, while Shuey was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.

The RedHawks return to action on Tuesday when they host Wright State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. It is the Cancer Awareness game and will be streamed on Miami College Sports Live for those who have a subscription.
