CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Miami University softball team completed a perfect weekend at the College of Charleston Invitational with a pair of victories on Sunday. The RedHawks knocked off Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan in a non-conference game, 8-1, in the opener. Miami then took down Brown, 6-4, in the nightcap. The `Hawks improve to 14-11 on the season.
Eastern Michigan (7-12) scored a run in the top of the first of the opener off of junior starting pitcher Kelsey Fredericks. It would be the only run she would allow in throwing a complete game for her third victory of the season. Fredericks allowed six hits, only three after the first.
Miami struck right back and took the lead for good in the bottom of the first. With one out, junior second baseman Eryn McCarver singled up the middle. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey followed with a double to right center to bring her home and tie the score. A double to left field by junior catcher Lauren Anderson scored Shuey and gave the RedHawks a 2-1 advantage.
There was an hour long rain delay in the middle of the fourth inning. Once the game resumed, Miami broke it open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Anderson led off with a single and was able to advance to second on the play. She was replaced by a pinch-runner, freshman Chloe Melanson. Senior designated player Hailey Reed tripled to right field, scoring Melanson.
Sophomore third baseman Kat Lee followed with a single up the middle to bring home Reed and make it 4-1. A sacrifice bunt moved Lee up to second, while a passed ball advanced her to third. One batter later, freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman singled up the middle to score Lee and give Miami a 5-1 lead. McCarver and Shuey hit back-to-back singles, scoring Schlattman and making it 6-1. A double to left field by freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl plated McCarver and put the RedHawks in front, 7-1. Miami scored one more run in the bottom of the fifth when Lee doubled to right field to score Reed.
Shuey finished the opener 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Lee was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. McCarver, Reed and Anderson also had two hits each for the RedHawks.
Miami struck first with three runs in the top of the first in the nightcap against Brown (8-6). Schlattman led off and was hit by a pitch. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single through the right side by McCarver advanced her to third. After an out was recorded, Wahl drew a walk to load the bases. Anderson walked to force home Schlattman and put the `Hawks on the board. Reed then reached on an error by the first baseman, which allowed McCarver and Wahl to score and make it 3-0 in favor of the Red and White.
Brown answered back with three runs on three hits to tie the score at three in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth inning, an error by the catcher allowed senior outfielder Tanya Busby to score, but the Bears came right back to retie the score at four with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
The RedHawks took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth. Schlattman led off with a walk. A bunt single by McCarver moved her to second. Shuey followed with an infield single to load the bases with no one out. After an out was recorded, Anderson double to center field, scoring Schlattman and McCarver to put Miami on top, 6-4.
Brown got a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, but senior pitcher Amber Logemann recorded a groundout and back-to-back strikeouts to secure the win for Miami. Logemann came on for the final four innings of the contest to earn her eighth victory of the season. She allowed one run on three hits, while striking out three.
Anderson finished the nightcap 1-for-3 with three RBIs. McCarver was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
The RedHawks begin MAC play next weekend when they host Ball State for a three-game series. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 3 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed on Miami College Sports Live.
