CHARLESTON, S.C. -- It was a good opening day at the College of Charleston Invitational as the Miami University softball team swept its two games on Saturday. The RedHawks had their bats going with a 10-1 win over Connecticut in the morning. Miami then used a three-run bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Central Connecticut State, 3-2. The `Hawks improve to 12-11 on the season.
Miami broke its opener against UConn (9-18) open with six runs in the top of the second inning. Junior designated player Lauren Anderson, senior outfielder Hailey Reed and sophomore third baseman Kat Lee each drew walks to load the bases with no one out. One batter later, a single from sophomore catcher Rylee Whispel brought home Anderson and put the RedHawks on the board. On a grounder by junior second baseman Eryn McCarver, the catcher threw the ball away, allowing Reed and Lee to score. After another out was recorded, senior outfielder Taylor Shuey singled home Whispel to make it 4-0. Freshman first baseman Johniann Wahl then cleared the bases with a triple that scored Shuey and McCarver to give Miami a 6-0 advantage.
Senior pitcher Amber Logemann kept the Huskies off the board until a hit by pitch gave Connecticut its only run in the bottom of the sixth. Logemann went on to earn her seventh win of the season, allowing only one run and five hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
The RedHawks added four runs in the top of the seventh. They loaded the bases with one out. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gliha came up to pinch-hit and singled up the middle to score Lee and junior outfielder Jenna Jones. Another throwing error by the Huskies allowed Whispel and McCarver to come home and finish off the 10-1 victory.
Wahl finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Shuey was 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Junior pitcher Carly Mortensen pitched well for Miami in the nightcap allowing only single runs in the top of the first and top of the third. However, Central Connecticut State (6-10) kept the RedHawks at bay through the first five innings, keeping MU off the board while allowing only three hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, Miami was finally able to break through. Freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman and Shuey started things off with back-to-back singles up the middle. Wahl singled through the left side and advanced to second on an error by the Blue Devils left fielder. That allowed Schlattman to come home and pull the RedHawks to within a run. Anderson followed with a single up the middle that scored Shuey and senior pinch-runner Tanya Busby to give Miami its first lead of the game at 3-2.
CCSU led off the top of the seventh with a single, and then used a sacrifice bunt to move the runner over to second base. Logemann came into the contest in relief and proceed to get a strikeout and a groundout to preserve the win for the RedHawks and earn her second save of the season.
Schlattman finished the nightcap 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Wahl was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Mortensen earned her third victory of the season, allowing only one earned run on six hits in 6.1 innings pitched. She struck out five.
Miami completes play at the College of Charleston Invitational with two more games on Sunday. The RedHawks will face Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan in a non-conference contest at 9 a.m. They will then take on Brown at 11 a.m.
