CINCINNATI, Ohio - A quick start offensively was not enough as the RedHawks dropped their matchup against Xavier, 12-4 on Wednesday. The defeat drops Miami's record to 6-9 in 2016.
Miami jumped ahead early, scoring in their opening opportunity at the plate. After an out, Tyler Harris singled up the middle and Ross Haffey doubled, putting runners on second and third. Then, Gary Russo singled up the middle, scoring Harris. The RedHawks collected their second run of the inning on a Chad Sedio groundout that allowed Haffey to come in and score. After just a half inning, the Red & White held a 2-0 edge.
Hayden Senger helped the 'Hawks extend their lead in the top of the second by launching his third home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall. Xavier responded in the home half of the second, collecting a homer of their own, a two-run blast to left. After two innings, the Red & White led 3-2.
The Musketeers captured their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back home runs thrusted them in front, 6-3, after four.
Miami got one back in the top of the sixth on a solo shot to left center by Gary Russo. Xavier answered in their next at bat, striking twice on a double and a passed ball. They padded their lead again in the eighth, plating four on a grand slam. After eight, Xavier led 12-4.
That was all the scoring the Musketeers needed as they held on to win by the same score.
Miami springs back in to action this weekend at Richmond. The series begins with a 3 pm. first pitch on Friday.
