ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Miami University baseball team earned a split in their doubleheader at Winthrop Saturday. Game one saw the Eagles jump out to an early 7-0 lead and ward off a late RedHawk rally to win 7-5. In the back half of the doubleheader, it took extra innings but Miami gutted out a 5-1 win in 10 innings.
Game 1 Recap
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the first game of the day, scoring seven runs over the first three innings. A few base hits and two errors were how the runs were scored.
Neither team could find their stride offensively after for a spell but Miami finally broke through in the top of the seventh. With one down, Gary Russo tripled to right center, which followed by Chad Sedio's third home run in the last two games. Then, after Adam Yacek reached on a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Julian Flanary singled to right, allowing Yacek to score. The RedHawks cut the Eagles' lead to 7-3 after six and a half.
Miami chipped away at the lead again in the top of the eighth when Tyler Harris' solo shot brought the Winthrop lead down to three at 7-4.
The RedHawks got to within two in the top of the ninth when Flanary singled to right to score Yacek but that was as close as it would get as Winthrop held on for a 7-5 win.
Game 2 Recap
Game two of the day and the series' finale was quite the pitcher's duel as neither team got on the board until the eighth. In the top half, with one already down, Harris doubled to left center. After Winthrop recorded another out, Russo singled to left, allowing Harris to come around and score, giving Miami the game's first lead at 1-0. The lead was short-lived however as a wild pitch with a runner on third allowed the Eagles to knot things back up. After eight, the two teams were in a 1-1 deadlock.
The game ended up going to extras, Miami's first such game of the season. In the top of the tenth, the Miami bats came alive as Steve Sada led off the frame with a single to right. After an out, Ross Haffey ripped a double to dead center, allowing Sada to come all the way from first to score and giving the 'Hawks the lead. The Red & White's next batter, Dallas Hall, also belted a double to center, bringing Haffey in to score. After Sedio worked a walk, he got to second on a wild pitch. Hall advanced to third on the play. Following another out, Flanary capped it off by poking one into shallow left, plating both Hall and Sedio. The RedHawks moved out to a 5-1 lead heading into the home half of the tenth. Ryan Markse came on for his third inning of work in the bottom of the tenth, sealing the victory and picking up his first win of the season.
Freshman pitcher Cole Gnetz got a start for the second-straight weekend. The righty went five innings strong, allowing just three hits, while walking just two and striking out four.
The Red & White get back in action this Tuesday at Cincinnati. The team will then take on Xavier on Wednesday.
