BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green University Falcons used a hot start and hit several outside shots throughout to down the Miami University women's basketball team, 76-56, Saturday afternoon. The RedHawks fall to 9-18 overall and 3-13 in the Mid-American Conference. Bowling Green improves to 10-15 overall and 6-10 in the MAC.
The loss spoiled a breakout performance from freshman guard Morgan Horvath. She came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points. She was 3-for-5 from the field (including 2-for-3 from behind the arc) and also was 5-for-6 from the free throw line.
Bowling Green jumped to an early 8-2 advantage before a three-pointer from sophomore guard Ana Richter and a jumper by sophomore guard Kayla Brown cut the deficit to 10-7 with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter. Miami shot went cold from there as it would not score the remainder of the period. The Falcons took advantage with a jumper and three straight 3-point buckets to take a 21-7 lead at the end of one.
A three-pointer by Horvath got the RedHawks' offense going again at the start of the second quarter. Bowling Green answered with a 12-6 run to push the advantage to 33-16 with 5:04 remaining until halftime. Freshman forward Kristen Levering drained a three-pointer and Horvath hit a couple of free throws, but the Falcons took a 41-21 lead into the break.
Despite three-pointers from Horvath and freshman point guard Leah Purvis, BGSU was able to pull away in the third quarter. They hit three more triples to take a 59-33 advantage going into the final period.
Freshman guard Kendall McCoy started the fourth quarter with a couple of buckets to help Miami cut into the deficit a bit. Purvis and Levering hit back-to-back triples, while Purvis followed with a layup to close it to within 18 at 66-48 with 3:50 to go, but the Falcons would not allow the `Hawks to get any closer as they finished off a 76-56 victory.
Horvath was joined in double figures by Purvis, who had 12 points, and McCoy, who finished with 10. Miami shot 45.2 percent (19-for-42) from the field and was 7-for-18 (38.9 percent) from behind the arc. Bowling Green finished the game shooting 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the field, including going 11-for-28 (39.3 percent) from three-point range. The Falcons were led by Lauren Tibbs and Sydney Lambert with 13 points each.
The RedHawks return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Kent State for a 7 p.m. tip. The game will air live on BCSN as well as the Time Warner Cable Sports Channel and ESPN3.
