ATLANTA -- The Miami University softball team earned its first victory of the season with a 7-1 win over Maryland Saturday at the Panther Invitational in Atlanta. The RedHawks improve to 1-2, while the Terrapins fall to 3-6.
Junior pitcher Kelsey Fredericks was the star on Saturday. She shut out the Maryland offense for six innings, departing after the Terrapins finally broke through for a run in the top of the seventh. She allowed only five hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
It remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when the RedHawks were able to push one across the board after junior second baseman Eryn McCarver and senior outfielder Tanya Busby reached on errors.
Miami took control with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Busby got an infield single to shortstop. Senior outfielder Taylor Shuey reached on a fielder's choice as the Terrapins retired Busby at second. That didn't matter as junior catcher Lauren Anderson blasted her first home run of the year over the centerfield wall to give the RedHawks a 3-0 lead.
The RedHawks then broke it open with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore designated player Kaitlyn Gliha led off with a double to leftfield and was replaced by pinch-runner freshman Chloe Melanson. A single by sophomore third baseman Kat Lee moved Melanson to third. Lee then stole second, while junior leftfielder Jenna Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Maryland got two outs in a row, but senior Hailey Reed came up to pinch hit and doubled through the left side to score Lee and Jones. Shuey followed with a double to left center that scored Busby and freshman shortstop Michaela Schlattman to make it 7-0.
After the Terrapins cut the deficit to 7-1, senior pitcher Amber Logemann came in and got the final three outs to preserve the victory.
Anderson, Shuey and Reed each finished with two RBIs on the day. Lee was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Miami completes play at the Panther Invitational on Sunday when it takes on Mercer at 12:30 p.m.
