ATHENS, Ohio -- A tough shooting night and too many turnovers resulted in a 72-44 defeat to Mid-American Conference leader Ohio by the Miami University women's basketball team on Wednesday. The RedHawks fall to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in the MAC. The Bobcats are 20-4 overall and 12-1 in the MAC.

Miami shot 28.6 percent (14-for-49) for the game. The Red and White had a season-high 36 turnovers that Ohio turned into 32 points. That proved to be too much to overcome despite a 44-31 rebounding advantage for the RedHawks.

Both teams came out playing zone and neither was able to solve the others' defense early. Sophomore forward Molly McDonagh and freshman forward Kristen Levering each had layups as the score was tied at four with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter. The RedHawks shot went cold as the Bobcats went on a 12-0 run over the next five and a half minutes. Redshirt sophomore forward Megan Galloway's layup at the buzzer ended the scoring drought and made it 16-6 in favor of Ohio at the end of the first.

Freshman point guard Leah Purvis drained a three-pointer to begin the second quarter. However the Bobcats answered with a 24-4 run to make it 40-13. After McDonagh drained a couple of free throws, a three-pointer by freshman forward Kendall McCoy sent the RedHawks into the break trailing, 41-18.

A three-pointer by McCoy and layups from McDonagh and Purvis helped get the Red and White's offense going early in the third quarter. However with the score 54-27, the Bobcats defense held strong as OU went on a 6-0 run. Purvis ended that run with a three-pointer, and at the end of the period Ohio held a 63-32 advantage.

Neither team scored much in the fourth quarter with Miami outscoring the Bobcats 12-9 to finish off OU's 72-44 victory.

Purvis and McCoy led the RedHawks with 12 points each. Levering led Miami with nine rebounds, including six offensive. Quiera Lampkins led Ohio with 20 points.

The RedHawks remain on the road as they head to Buffalo on Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and it will air live on ESPN3.
