OXFORD, Ohio -- For their performances last week senior men's basketball guard Geovonie McKnight and women's swimming and diving junior Stephanie LeMire are Miami's Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 25-31.
McKnight anchored a superb, total team effort that led to the RedHawks' first MAC win as Miami clipped MAC West Division leader Northern Illinois, 72-59, to snap a 10 game skid. With his minutes limited in the first half against NIU due to foul trouble, McKnight played all 20 minutes of the second half, running the point at times, to spearhead the RedHawks. He fueled the fire in the second half, handing out two assists that both led to triples and pouring in six points of his own in the first four minutes to push the MU lead to nine. After NIU closed within four with just under five minutes to play, McKnight stepped up and scored 10 of the RedHawks' 11 points over the final 3:48 while anchoring a Miami defense that limited NIU to just two points over that final stretch to secure the double-figures win. He scored 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half and handed out four assists that led to another 12 second-half points to contribute to 28 of Miami's 37 points and 75.7 percent of its scoring over the final 20 minutes. Earlier in the week, McKnight was one of two players to score in double figures against Central Michigan, recording 10 points and handing out four assists.
This is the second time this season and in his career that McKnight has been named Miami's Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of Dec. 28-Jan. 3.
LeMire helped her team to a third-place finish in the 200-yd medley relay. She was one of two RedHawks to win two individual races Saturday. She emerged victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:03.11. Her time was 1.55 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. LeMire finished 1.81 seconds faster than Akron's second-place finisher in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning the event with a time of 2:16.18. She also was a part of the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team (1:35.74) and third-place 200-yard medley relay team (1:44.66) LeMire was the highest scorer for the RedHawks, earning 25 of their 142 points.
This is the first time this season and third time in her career that LeMire has been named Miami's Female Athlete of the Week. She last won it for the week of Jan. 5-11, 2015.
The next Miami Athletes of the Week will be announced Monday, Feb. 8.
