Men's Basketball
Last Week: A gritty, total team effort that included four RedHawks scoring in double figures catapulted Miami to its first Mid-American Conference win, collecting a 72-59 triumph over MAC West Division leader Northern Illinois on Saturday to snap a 10-game skid. Senior guard Geovonie McKnight led the way with 18 points against the Huskies for the Red and White. (Recap) Earlier in the week, the Miami dropped a 68-51 decision to Central Michigan. Sophomore forward Rod Mills notched 13 points to lead Miami. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks hit the road for a game for a 7 p.m. game at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday, Feb. 2 before returning home to host Bowling Green at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: Miami (8-11 overall, 2-6 MAC) dropped its only game of the week as a strong second half performance allowed Central Michigan to pull away for a 77-54 win. Leah Purvis led the RedHawks with 18 points. (Recap) This Week: Miami returns home on Wednesday when it hosts Kent State for the National Women and Girls in Sports game live on ESPN3 at 7 p.m. The RedHawks then travel to Akron Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip.
Hockey
Last Week: Miami began a four-game home stand against No. 13/14 Denver over the weekend. The RedHawks showed tremendous tenacity in blocking 24 shots and holding the Pioneers to 21 shots on goal in Friday's opener. Danton Heinen put DU on top at the 7:06 mark, but Anthony Louis answered a minute and a half later to even the score at 1-1 after 20 minutes. The Red and White jumped ahead on Jack Roslovic's power play goal late in the second period and killed off a double minor that carried over from the end of the second into the third period. Miami sealed the win on Kevin Morris' empty net goal late for its fourth-straight win (Recap). While the RedHawks got a Kiefer Sherwood goal late in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead, the Pioneers countered with three-straight goals to dig them into a 3-1 hole late in the second period of Saturday's finale. Miami responded with goals by Alex Gacek and Sean Kuraly to tie it at 3-3 early in the third, but Quentin Shore and Nolan Zajac struck in the third period to force MU to settle for a split in a 5-3 loss (Recap). This Week: Miami finishes up its home stand with a weekend series against NCHC rival St. Cloud State that starts on Friday night at 7:35 p.m.
Women's Tennis
Last Week: Miami earned its first conference honors of the season as freshman Anzhelika Shapovalova was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week. Additionally, the sophomore pair of Nelli Ponomareva and Anastasiia Vasiukhina were named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week. On Friday, the RedHawks (1-1) picked up their first victory of the season with a 5-2 victory at Eastern Kentucky. Miami used a sweep of the doubles competition and three straight singles victories to quickly clinch the victory. Junior Andreea Badileanu (6-2, 6-0) and sophomore Hannah Shteyn (6-4, 6-2) earned their first victories of the regular season, while Ponomareva (6-4, 6-4) and freshman Emily Struble (6-2, 6-0) extended their winning streaks to three and five respectively (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks will now turn their attention to a pair of matches this weekend against local rivals. Miami will travel to face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday, Feb. 5 at 5 p.m. at the Western Tennis & Fitness Center. On the following day, the RedHawks will host the Xavier Musketeers in their home opener at 4 p.m. at the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: Miami's collegiate and junior teams each finished third at the Midwestern Championships in Portland, Oregon, over the weekend. The RedHawk collegiate team finished third among an eight-team field, while the junior team placed third among a four-team field. (Friday Recap) (Saturday Recap) This Week: All three RedHawk teams are idle from competition, but the collegiate and junior teams will perform at the first intermission of Miami's Friday and Saturday hockey games, respectively.
Indoor Track and Field
Last Week: Due to a late format change at the Vanderbilt Invitational the RedHawks took the weekend off. This Week: The Red and White are headed to Notre Dame for the Meyo Invitational Friday and Saturday.
Women's Swim & Dive
Last Week: The RedHawks closed out their dual meet season on Saturday against Akron. Miami lost another close match 158-142. Eight seniors were honored before the meet, Shannon Ahearn, Sara Krueger, Stephanie Nemeth, Michele Rielly, Natalie Rohr, Emma Szczupakiewicz, Gabby Veri and Betsy Zilch. Sophomore Ana Maria Castellanos earned her first collegiate win, swimming a 4:29.37 in the 400-yard IM. Juniors Stephanie LeMire and Pei Lin both won two individual events (Recap). This Week: The RedHawks will be off for two weeks until they go back to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the Ohio State Invitational Saturday, Feb. 13 to Sunday, Feb. 14.
