DAYTON, Ohio - The Miami University women's basketball team battled hard but fell to Wright State, 65-57, on Wednesday evening at the Wright State Invitational. The defeat moves the RedHawks' record to 5-7 on the season, while Wright State improved to 8-4.
Freshman guards Lauren Dickerson and Abbey Hoff had career nights offensively for the Red & White. Dickerson went off for a career-high 30 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the field, while Hoff added a personal best 12 points off of the bench.
The RedHawks surged out to an early 6-0 lead on two layups by Dickerson and a basket from Jazz Smith. After exchanging three-pointers, the Raiders scored 11 of the quarter's next 14 points, giving them a 14-12 lead through 10 minutes of play.
Wright State sustained its momentum in the early moments of the second as it began on a 9-2 run, opening up a 23-14 advantage with 7:46 to go in the half. Miami settled in and got two three-pointers and a jumper by Dickerson, a triple from Abbey Hoff and a Smith two-point basket, bringing the deficit to seven by the time the teams reached the half. Midway through, the Raiders held a 34-27 edge.
The third quarter saw Wright State open strong again as it captured two quick baskets. Miami responded with two layups from Dickerson and another three-pointer by Hoff, making the score 39-34 with 6:27 to play in the frame. After the Raiders rebuilt their lead to nine, the 'Hawks finished the frame with a 10-2 run on scores from Kayla Brown, Dickerson, and Megan Galloway. A shot from long range at the buzzer by Dickerson evened the game at 46-46 with just one quarter to play.
The Raiders began the fourth with a free throw and layup to retake the lead. However, back-to-back layups by Dickerson gave Miami its first lead of the game at 50-49 with 6:42 to go. It was short-lived as Wright State came right back with a 12-1 run, then sealed the game with four free throws.
Miami closes out its non-conference slate on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. against Cedarville. The team will then head back on the road to open MAC play at Buffalo on New Year's Eve.
