Oct. 30, 2016 Box Score
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan scored eight minutes into Sunday's Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal to eliminate the Miami soccer team by a 1-0 score.
The RedHawks finish their 2016 season 8-9-2 with the setback.
"We played hard today so we have no regrets on how we competed," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "We've said all year that if we give a quality effort, we'll stand by the result. Unfortunately, the result didn't go our way."
Similar to recent outings, Western Michigan pinned Miami in its defensive side of the pitch for a long portion of play in the early going. The Broncos capitalized on the early pressure in the eighth minute when Candace Uhl gathered the ball in the box, turned and fired the ball into the upper 90 to put the Broncos up 1-0.
After conceding the first five shot attempts of the half, Miami began to establish a counter attack that created some good opportunities. One such counter came in the 15th minute when Kat Zalar and Olivia Winnett had some open field and tried to play a two-man game. The ball got played to Winnett behind the back line, where she fired a shot into the net, but she was flagged offside on the play. A similar situation happened to Winnett in the 18th minute when the ball ended up on her foot in the box after a volley.
Perhaps the best legal chance of the half for Miami came in the 33rd minute when Bianca Medancic made a strong run down the right flank. The sophomore got clear of the defense at a sharp angle in the box and her shot eluded Stephanie Heber, but went wide of the target. WMU maintained its 1-0 lead at the half with a 7-3 advantage in shot attempts.
While it managed to generate some counter attacks in the final 20 minutes of the first half, offense was difficult to come by for the Red and White in the second half. Kat Zalar had perhaps the best chance in the half, which came in the 66th minute when she cut into the middle from the left side for a shot that Stephanie Heber stopped. That shot was the lone attempt for Miami in the second half as Western Michigan held onto its one-goal lead.
The Broncos ended up outshooting the RedHawks by a 14-4 margin while also having an 11-3 lead in corner kicks. In her final collegiate match, Vic Maniaci stopped four of five shots that came her way.
Miami finishes its 2016 season having made its fifth-straight appearance in the MAC Tournamment.
