OXFORD, Ohio - Something about playing Bowling Green brings a flare for the dramatic to
Anthony Louis.
After scoring the game-winning goal with two seconds left in last year's home tilt with Bowling Green, the senior forward scored 2:05 into overtime to hand the RedHawks a 2-1 win over the Falcons on Friday night. The win is Miami's (3-1-2) second straight and extends its unbeaten streak to five games.
Play went quite quickly in the first few minutes as teams played 3:59 without a whistle before Bowling Green iced the puck. The Falcons (0-6-1) were called for the evening's first penalty, giving the RedHawks an early power play at the 4:36 mark. Miami was unable to generate much on that first man advantage and the contest remained scoreless.
About 12 minutes in, Lukas Craggs got the best opportunity for either side when he deflected a puck past a defender in the neutral zone and caught up to it for a breakaway chance that
Ryan Larkin made a pad stop on. The RedHawks had one more power play midway through the frame, but could not create anything on it as the game remained scoreless after 20 minutes with both teams getting six shots on goal.
Bowling Green held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the second period, partly thanks to going on both power plays that occurred in the middle frame. Most of the shots were at the perimeter and nothing found the net as the contest wore on scoreless going into the third period.
After playing two tight checking scoreless periods, Miami got on the board right away in the third as it controlled the opening draw and created a mini 3-on-2 with the puck ultimately finding
Carson Meyer below the right dot, where he roofed a wrist shot 10 seconds into the frame to give the Red and White a 1-0 lead. Louis and
Josh Melnick each drew assists on Meyer's second goal of the season.
Miami's nation-leading penalty kill was put to the test roughly six minutes into the third as it got called for a five-minute major interference penalty with 13:05 left in regulation. MU was equal to the task, allowing just one BGSU shot to maintain the lead past the midway point of the frame.
The Red and White got a chance to put the game away on the power play with 6:32 left, but despite consistent zone possession, they were unable to do more than fire two errant shots, leaving it a one-goal contest. With time winding down, the Falcons pulled Chris Nell for an extra skater pressing to tie things up, which they eventually did thanks to a Mark Friedman shot from the right half-wall that found the net with 1:06 remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Just over a minute into overtime, Bowling Green committed a penalty 200 feet from its own net when it got whistled for boarding at the 1:09 mark. The fourth time on the man advantage was the charm as a pass at the point by
Carter Johnson caromed off Meyer directly to Louis at the right circle. With some open space and a passing option at the far wing, the senior forward looked off a defender and sold the pass before beating Nell five-hold with 2:55 left in the extra session to give Miami its second-straight victory.
BGSU ended up outshooting MU by a 21-16 margin, but went 0-for-3 on the power play, which included a five-minute major man advantage, while Miami finished 1-for-4 on the power play. Louis and Meyer both posted multi-point nights with a goal and an assist apiece. Larkin stopped 20 of 21 shots to earn the win while Nell made 14 saves on 16 shots.
The RedHawks and Falcons wrap up their weekend series on Saturday night. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
