MUNCIE, Ind. - The Miami soccer team had a hard time getting going offensively as it suffered a 2-0 loss at Ball State in Thursday afternoon's regular season finale.
The Cardinals (14-3-2, 9-1-1 Mid-American) clinched their second-straight MAC regular season title while the RedHawks (8-8-2, 5-4-2 MAC) drop to fifth in the final MAC standings.
"The great thing about the college soccer season is that it affords you the opportunity to win a championship multiple times," head coach Bobby Kramig said. "While we are disappointed with how the regular season ended. The MAC Tournament allows us a second chance for a championship."
Ball State came out with pressure early on, getting a couple corner kicks and shots on net over the first seven minutes, all of which were fended off by the Miami defense and goalkeeper Vic Maniaci. The RedHawks had trouble getting on track during the first half as the Cardinals fired all 24 shots and took all 11 corner kicks, getting a goal from Lucy Walton off a cross in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the half.
The Cardinals continued peppering the RedHawk goal with shots in the second half, eventually adding to their lead on a Yela Ziswiler goal in the 63rd minute. Miami fired its lone shot attempt of the day with just over two minutes left in regulation as it suffered its third straight defeat.
Ball State outshot Miami by a 34-1 margin and had a 16-1 advantage in corner kicks. Maniaci finished with a career-high 13 saves on the 15 shots that reached her while Alyssa Heintschel made one save for the shutout.
The RedHawks enter the MAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed for the second-straight season and begin their postseason run where their last one ended, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to face defending MAC Tournament champion Western Michigan on Sunday. That match kicks off at 1 p.m.
