OXFORD, Ohio - A season-high 25 shots were launched by the Miami soccer team, but despite a territorial advantage in play, the Miami soccer team settled for a point in a 0-0 tie with Bowling Green on Sunday.
The RedHawks (8-5-2, 5-1-2 Mid-American) extended their unbeaten streak to five matches with the draw in their final regular season home match. The point along with some favorable results around the conference officially clinches Miami's fifth-straight trip to the MAC Tournament.
In the second minute of play, Miami generated a strong run as Jenna Weiner played Kat Zalar in behind the Bowling Green defense down the left side. With a partial breakaway, Kathleen Duwve came out to challenge Zalar and eventually made a save on a point blank opportunity.
After allowing seven of the first nine shot attempts, the Falcons (7-8-1, 2-5-1 MAC) began establishing an attack of their own, getting four quick shots with Patricia Koutoulas having to make a close range stop on Hannah Dolfuss before Hannah Ross' follow up sailed high. In the 33rd minute, BGSU's top scorer Skylar Fleak launched a shot from about 30 yards out that started dipping towards the net, but ended up going just high.
With under seven minutes to play in the half, Miami got numbers on a counterattack and a cross made its way to Zalar in the middle. She tried to chip the ball over Duwve, but the spin of the ball ended up making the shot turn back the other way back to the keeper's waiting arms. The contest remained scoreless at the half despite a 9-6 Miami shot advantage.
The RedHawks opened things up even more in the second half, outshooting the Falcons by a 13-5 margin. That margin became noticeable as regulation wore on as play was almost entirely on the Bowling Green side of the pitch. Kat Zalar had a couple good opportunities with just over 20 minutes left as in the 65th minute she made a strong move to the inside and dribbled the ball to the top of the penalty area for a shot in the middle that Duwve got a piece of. In the 68th minute, she had a chance from an angle that Duwve again covered up.
An 81st minute corner kick nearly cashed in as Amy Malone's cross bounced to Madison Knock's head, but her redirect went just wide of the target. Olivia Winnett then got the ball in the box and turned for a shot that was blocked, but the rebound kicked out to Colette Jaslowski, who fired a shot over the cage. With the dust settling, the contest wore on into overtime.
The RedHawks fired three of the four shots that were registered in both overtime periods. The best opportunity came in the first overtime when Medancic got to the right flank and slipped a centering pass to an on rushing Rachel Marble. Her one-time shot from 15-yards went to the target quickly, but Duwve fought it off to keep the score tied through the full 110 minutes.
Overall, Miami outshot Bowling Green by a 25-12 margin with each team attempting six corner kicks. Koutoulas made four saves to pick up her first career solo shutout in her second straight start while Duwve stopped all six shots that came her way.
Miami has a short turnaround to deal with as it returns to the pitch on Thursday to start a three-match road trip against MAC East leader Kent State. That match kicks off at 4 p.m.
