Hockey
Last Week: The RedHawks opened the new year with a non-conference series split against Rensselaer. Saturday's series opener saw Josh Melnick open the scoring 80 seconds in, but Riley Bourbonnais netted a shorthanded goal to tie it late in the first and gave the Engineers a 2-1 lead early in the second period. Jack Roslovic evened the score briefly, but another RPI goal before the second intermission capped the scoring and gave it a 3-2 series opening win (Recap). After Andrew Schmit netted a goal two minutes into Sunday's finale, the RedHawks entered the third period trailing 2-1. MU responded by taking the first 10 shots of the third and getting goals from Alex Gacek and Justin Greenberg, along with an empty net goal out of Chris Joyaux to seal away a 4-2 comeback win (Recap). This Week: The Red and White resume NCHC play against Minnesota Duluth on Friday night.
Men's Basketball
Last Week: Senior guard Geovonie McKnight poured in a career-high 24 points off an impressive 9-of-12 shooting effort from the field, but it was not enough as the RedHawks were edged 71-67 by South Carolina State in their lone game of the week on Saturday. It was the first 20-point game by a RedHawk this season and also the first of McKnight's career. (Recap) This Week: Miami opens Mid-American Conference play, traveling to Bowling Green for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Jan. 6 before returning home to host Toledo at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Women's Basketball
Last Week: The RedHawks (6-6 overall, 0-1 MAC) went 1-2 on the week, advancing to the championship game of the FAU Holiday Tournament before dropping their MAC opener. Miami opened play at the FAU Holiday Tournament with a 68-49 win over LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday evening in Boca Raton, Florida. Sophomore guard Baleigh Reid led the way with 17 points. (Recap) The RedHawks overcame an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to force overtime, but FAU used a late 7-0 run in the extra session to capture a 68-65 win in the championship game of the Florida Atlantic University Holiday Tournament on Wednesday. Reid earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 19 points. (Recap) Miami fell to Bowling Green State University 64-58 on Saturday afternoon inside Millett Hall. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Freshman forward Kristen Levering led the 'Hawks with 13 points. (Recap) This Week: Mid-American Conference play continues on Wednesday when the Northern Illinois Huskies come to Oxford for a 7 p.m. contest. That will be a Dollar Days game with all tickets only $1 and select concession items only $2. Miami hits the road for the first time in MAC play when it makes the short trip to Muncie, Indiana to take on Ball State Saturday at 2 p.m.
