OXFORD, Ohio -- Facing an eighth-straight game without a win, a determined Miami hockey team scored three third-period goals to post a come from behind 4-2 win over Rensselaer on Sunday night.
Sunday's victory marks a season high in goals for the RedHawks (6-10-2) and snaps their seven-game winless streak.
Much like Saturday's opener, Miami got things started on the right foot early on as Andrew Schmit cashed in a rebound of Devin Loe's shot on the rush to put the RedHawks up 1-0 just 2:02 in. Ryan Siroky also picked up an assist on Schmit's second goal of the year. The Engineers (11-7-3) had a power play opportunity with just under seven minutes gone by, but the Red and White held them at bay in a relatively easy penalty kill.
A RedHawk turnover proved costly at the 10:40 mark as the miscue sent Jesper Ohrvall in for a breakaway and he shot one by Jay Williams to even the score at 1-1. MU went on its first power play with 6:36 remaining in the first, but RPI held it without a shot as the 1-1 tie wore into the latter stages of the frame. Another opportunity presented itself for Sean Kuraly late in the frame as a loose puck sat open in the slot, but his shot was kicked away by Jason Kasdorf's pad and the teams entered the dressing room tied 1-1 with MU owning a 9-7 edge in shots after 20 minutes.
Skating room was hard to find in the second period as RPI took four of the first five shots during the first 10 minutes of the middle frame. Miami withstood those shots and killed off another power play before getting an opportunity with a man advantage at the 11:43 mark. However, it was the Engineers who found the offense as Jake Wood converted on a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush to put them ahead 2-1 with 6:52 to go in the period.
Shortly after the power play expired, Sean Kuraly got a step behind the Engineer blue line for a breakaway. While RPI's defense got back to get a body on him, Kuraly fired a strong shot anyway and Kasdorf covered it with his pad to keep it 2-1. Moments later, Riley Bourbonnais had a chance to give RPI a two-goal lead when he got behind the Miami defense, but Williams responded with an emphatic glove save to keep MU within a shot after 40 minutes.
The RedHawks surged ahead at the start of the third period, hemming the Engineers in their defensive zone and registering the first 10 shots on goal. That eighth shot finally tied things up as Alex Gacek drove the net and cashed in on a rebound of Kuraly's shot after Kevin Morris sprung the duo for a 2-on-1 rush with 13:23 left.
Justin Greenberg's first goal of the season put the RedHawks back in front just 1:47 later when Kiefer Sherwood fed him coming on late down the right wing, where he one-timed a shot by Kasdorf to make it a 3-2 game. Zach LaValle also picked up an assist on the play.
The Engineers tried to press the attack, but the RedHawks were able to keep them from getting to the middle of the ice. RPI managed to gain some possession in the offensive zone and pull Kasdorf for an extra skater in the final two minutes, but Chris Joyaux picked up a loose pick in the middle of the defensive zone and managed to fling the puck into the empty net at the other end to put the game away.
The RedHawks held the Engineers under 20 shots for the second-straight night, outshooting them 29-19 overall and 15-5 in the big third period. Neither team connected on either of their power plays, though RPI scored a short-handed goal for the second-straight night. Ten different Miami players recorded a point in the win as Williams made 17 saves for his first victory of the year. Kasdorf turned away 25 shots of 28 shots at the other end.
Miami resumes National Collegiate Hockey Conference play on Friday when it hosts Minnesota Duluth for a two-game series. Puck drops at 7:35 p.m.
