OXFORD, Ohio - The Miami University women's basketball team fell to Bowling Green State University 64-58 on Saturday afternoon inside Millett Hall. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams. Miami falls to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in the MAC. The Falcons improve to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the MAC.
Miami shot 46.2 percent for the contest, but was only able to attempt 39 shots (18-for-39). Bowling Green finished the game shooting 42.0 percent (21-for-50) from the field, including hitting 50.0 percent (12-for-24) shots in the second half as they overcame a 12-point deficit.
Freshman forward Kristen Levering led the RedHawks with 13 points, while sophomore guard Ana Richter finished with 12.
It was a strong start for Miami as it went on a 7-1 run midway through the first quarter to take a 15-10 advantage and ended the opening 10 minutes with a 17-15 lead.
Behind that hot shooting performance, Miami began the second quarter on a 10-2 run. Much of that hot shooting was from Richter, who scored nine points during the run and finished the first half 5-of-5 shooting for 11 points. Richter and the RedHawks would go into the locker room with a 36-24 advantage.
Miami did not connect on a field goal in the third quarter but were 10-of-14 from the free throw line, while Bowling Green made 5-of-8 three pointers to close to within 46-42 entering the fourth quarter.
Layups from sophomore forward Molly McDonagh and sophomore guard Kayla Brown ended the Red and White's field goal, drought, but Bowling Green's hot shooting continued early in the fourth quarter. The Falcons claimed their first lead since early in the first quarter when a pair of free throws put them in front 53-52 with 4:07 left in the contest. The two teams exchanged baskets before BG connected on a layup to take a 57-54 advantage with 1:19 to play. Redshirt sophomore forward Megan Galloway answered with a jumper to once again get Miami to within a point with 55 seconds to play.
Bowling Green drilled a three from the wing to push the lead to four at 60-56. Galloway put another layup in with 22 seconds to go, but the Falcons made their final four free throws to end the contest and take a 64-58 victory.
Miami finished the game shooting 6-of-11 from behind the arc, while the Falcons went 10-for-23 from three-point range, including hitting seven during their second half comeback. Brown finished with eight points for the RedHawks, while sophomore guard Baleigh Reid had seven points and five assists. BG held a slight advantage in rebounds (27-26) and assists (17-16).
The RedHawks return to action on Jan. 6 in a home contest versus Northern Illinois. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be carried live on ESPN3.
