OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University softball head coach Clarisa Crowell announced Monday two new additions to the RedHawks 2016 squad. Infielder Johniann Wahl (Racho Palos Verdes, Calif.) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will be a freshman next season. Pitcher Carly Mortensen (Valencia, Calif.) joins Miami as a transfer. She comes to the RedHawks from the University of the Pacific and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
I am very excited that Carly and Johniann will be joining our team this fall," said Crowell. "Both players are coming from Southern California, and have played at a high level for several years. It was our goal this summer to add depth to our pitching staff and defense, and we are extremely fortunate to have Carly and Johnniann."
Mortensen was at Pacific for previous three seasons. As a freshman in 2013, she went 4-4 with a 2.57 ERA in 23 appearances (five starts). She then suffered an injury early during the 2014 season, forcing her to take a medical redshirt. Mortensen made her return in 2015 and was able to appear in seven contests.
Prior to her time at Pacific, Mortensen was a four-year letterwinner for Valencia High School in Valencia, California. She had a career record of 75-18 with 845 strikeouts. As a senior Mortensen had a 1.17 ERA and 315 strikeouts, earning a spot on the All-California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division I First Team. She played her club softball for SoCal Explosion.
"Carly is a competitive and hard-working individual and she will be a great compliment to our pitching staff," said Crowell.
Wahl was a four-year letterwinner for Palos Verdes High School in Palos Verdes Estates, California. She played first base as a freshman and sophomore, and third base as a junior and senior. She was named First-Team All-Bay League and Second-Team All-Area as a senior after hitting .424. She led the team with a .500 batting average as a junior in 2014 and was named First-Team All-Bay League that season as well. She played her club softball for the Firecrackers, leading them to a second place finish in the Colorado Tournament and a championship in the Premiere Platinum Tournament in 2014.
"Johniann is a power-hitting corner player, who will give us depth at both first base and third base," commented Crowell.
"Carly and Johniann will be great additions to our team, and I expect them both to have a significant impact on our program."
Mortensen and Wahl join six other newcomers on the 2016 RedHawk squad. That includes fellow transfer in junior catcher Lauren Anderson (Valencia, Calif./Penn State/College of the Canyons), as well as freshmen Shannon Hohman (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley), Michaela Schlattman (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central), Chloe Melanson (La Verne, Calif./Bonita), Hannah Girlie (Holland, Ohio/Springfield) and Anna Geary (Geneva, Ill./Geneva).
