CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference announced its Distinguished Scholar Athlete Awards for all winter and spring sports on Friday. For Miami, 21 student-athletes among eight different sports earned the honor.
The following RedHawks earned Distinguished Scholar Athlete honors: Laura Bess (women's indoor track and field), Jess Hoover (women's indoor track and field), McKenna Kiple (women's indoor track and field), Mattie Moncayo (women's indoor track and field), Kathie Wollney (women's indoor track and field), Evan Bader (men's swimming and diving), Jacob Prodoehl (men's swimming and diving), Sean Sargent (men's swimming and diving), Katie Bootsma (women's swimming and diving), Sara Krueger (women's swimming and diving), Annie Marquiss (women's swimming and diving), Stephanie Nemeth (women's swimming and diving), Stephanie Pearce (women's swimming and diving), Emma Szczupakiewicz (women's swimming and diving), Courtney Larson (women's basketball), Andreea Badileanu (tennis), Ramona Costea (tennis), Amber Logemann (softball), Andrew Dusing (men's outdoor track and field), Joe Stewart (men's outdoor track and field) and Adam Yacek (baseball).
The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the winter and spring sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the `best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season. The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.
Previously in February the fall sports were honored, with 14 RedHawks among six different sports being named Distinguished Scholar Athletes.
