OXFORD, Ohio - Fresh off of wrapping up a four-year career as a RedHawk, Ryan Powers (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth) signed a free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox organization Saturday. Powers is the second Red & White pitcher in as many years to receive a pro contract. Seth Varner signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization following the 2014 season.
Powers will travel to Arizona Sunday as he gears up for rookie mini-camp. At the conclusion of mini-camp, the right-handed pitcher will be assigned to a minor league affiliate.
Powers started 14 games for Miami this past season, leading all pitchers with five wins, 85.0 innings pitched and 61 strikeouts. He posted a career-high eight strikeouts on three occasions this season and tossed his first career complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over Kent State. In 2014, Powers earned Second Team All-MAC honors after posting a 9-3 record.
In total, Powers made 62 appearances in a Miami uniform, starting 30.
