OXFORD, Ohio--For the first time in Miami University swimming history, the Red and White had an individual capture Capital One Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as junior Evan Bader (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) was tabbed a Third-Team Men's At-Large Academic All-American. The organization announced the 2014-15 honorees on Thursday afternoon.
Bader is just the fourth Miamian to earn Academic All-America At-Large recognition, becoming the first since ice hockey's Mike Kompon earned the honor in 2004. The men's at-large team is comprised of student-athletes from the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. He is the 36th Miami University student-athlete to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America plaudits and the second this year, joining volleyball's Meg Riley as 2014-15 honorees. As a rising senior, Bader has the opportunity next year to become just the seventh in Miami Athletics history to earn the award multiple times.
Bader, a breaststroke and individual medley specialist for the RedHawks, owns a 3.99 grade-point average and is a double major in chemical engineering and chemistry. In the pool, Bader accounted for 48 points at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships, helping Miami to a fifth-place finish in the 400 medley relay, while notching a sixth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and a 10th-place finish in the 100 breaststroke. During his junior campaign, he propelled Miami to first-place finishes in the 400 medley relay twice and notched a pair of top two finishes in the 100 breaststroke. Despite a significant mid-season foot injury, Bader worked diligently to get back in the pool, missing just one meet during the season.
He is a two-time Academic All-MAC selection and has twice been named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week during his three-year career. He was tabbed a First-Team Capital One Academic All-District 5 Men's At-Large selection in May, which placed him on the Academic All-America ballot. Bader is a member of Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Fraternity.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
