OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks (11-35, 9-12 MAC) fought valiantly, but Ohio State pulled away and cruised to a 20-7 victory over Miami Tuesday at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
Ohio State got the scoring started in the top of the first. Troy Kuhn knocked a one-out triple to left center and then Pat Porter brought him in on a sac fly. The Buckeyes extended their lead in the top second on a Craig Nennig one-run single to right center. The OSU lead stood at 2-0 through one and a half innings of play.
Miami responded in the bottom of the second, cutting the Buckeye lead in half. With Adam Yacek on first, Jacob Wolf and Scott Slappey earned back-to-back singles with Yacek scoring on the latter. The RBI is Slappey’s 24th of the season.
OSU extended their lead in the top of the third. A Ronnie Dawson one-run single to right center scored the first run of the inning. Later on in the frame, with the bases loaded, the RedHawks walked four straight Buckeye batters, giving OSU a 7-1 lead through two and a half innings. The Buckeyes scored for the fourth inning in a row in the top of the fourth, going up, 8-1, after Dawson scored on a fielder’s choice.
The RedHawks sliced into the deficit in the bottom half of the fourth. Yacek earned a leadoff single and, after a pop out, Steve Sada ripped a single into left center. The next at-bat, Jacob Wolf belted his third home run of the season over the left field wall, cutting the Buckeye lead to 8-4.
The Buckeyes doubled their lead in the top of the fifth, going up 12-4 on a Dawson grand slam. The RedHawks remained persistent though. With two out, Yacek ripped a triple over the right fielder’s head, scoring Jake Romano, who reached on a single earlier in the inning. That was followed-up by a two-run home run by Max Andresen, his second of the season. The Buckeyes held a 12-7 lead through five.
The scoring quieted for the next few innings as no more runs crossed the plate until the top of the eighth. The Buckeyes increased their lead to 17-7 on a two-run home run by Troy Montgomery, a two-run double by Dawson and a sac fly by Nick Sergakis. OSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth on a Dawson two-run single and an Aaron Gretz sac fly.
The RedHawks could not muster any runs in the ninth, falling to the Buckeyes, 20-7.
The Red & White return to the diamond Friday at Toledo, where they begin a three-game set with the Rockets.
