OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks were in search of their first home conference series win of the season Sunday and got just that, earning a 13-5 victory over Eastern Michigan at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Matt Honchel led the way, going 4-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored.
EMU got the scoring started in the top of the first, scoring two runs on back-to-back groundouts. Miami got on the board in the bottom of the second when Steve Sada singled to center field, allowing Adam Yacek to score from third base. EMU held a 2-1 lead through two innings of play.
The Eagles extended their lead in the top of the third as Jordan Peterson clubbed a solo homerun over the left field wall, pushing their lead to 3-1 through two and a half innings. The RedHawks came back firing in the bottom half of the third as the offense plated five runs in the frame. The runs were scored on a Matt Honchel one-run single, a bases-loaded walk by Yacek, a wild pitch that scored Jake Romano, a Max Andresen one-run single and a Sada one-run triple down the right field line. The RedHawks came out of the inning with a 6-3 lead.
EMU got one run back in the top of the fourth on an Adam Dennison double to left center. However, Miami plated three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run triple by Honchel and a one-run double by Yacek put Miami up, 9-4, through four innings of play.
EMU plated one more in the top of the fifth as John Rubino stole third and then scored on a throwing error. Miami responded in the bottom half as they pushed across four more runs. A Jacob Wolf two-run home run and a Honchel two-run double widened the lead to 13-5. Neither team scored the rest of the way and Miami cruised to a victory.
Miami starter Ryan Powers (5-7) went seven innings to get the win, allowing five runs on nine hits and struck out eight. Brad Schwartz pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing no hits or runs while striking out two.
The RedHawks return to action Tuesday as they host Ohio State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
