OXFORD, Ohio – The RedHawks (9-34, 7-12 MAC) found themselves in a familiar situation Friday night, dropping their second-straight extra innings game, 3-1, to Eastern Michigan at McKie Field at Hayden Park. Earlier in the week, the Red & White dropped a 6-5 decision to Eastern Kentucky, also in 11 innings.
Eastern Michigan got the scoring started in their first at-bat when John Montgomery singled to left center field, scoring John Rubino to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
No more runs crossed the plate until the bottom of the seventh when Miami tied things up on a Ryan Elble one-run single that scored Spencer Dull.
The game-deciding runs came in the top of the 11th when Tony Dileo reached on an error and Montgomery and Brennan Williams came around to score, pushing the Eagles ahead, 3-1.
Miami starter Gus Graham tossed six innings, allowed four hits and one earned run while striking out five EMU batters. Will Schierholz (1-3) took the loss for the RedHawks, throwing three and a third innings of relief and allowing two runs, both unearned. He also struck out three hitters. The Eagles’ lone reliever of the night, Sam Delaplane, notched the win to move his record to 5-2 on the year.
The RedHawks return to the diamond tomorrow as they take on Eastern Michigan for game two of their series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. In day two of honoring Miami’s baseball legends, Saturday we celebrate “Papa” Joe Hayden Day.
