OXFORD, Ohio - The RedHawks' season came to an end Saturday as Ohio downed Miami, 17-5 at McKie Field at Hayden Park. 14 seniors were recognized prior to the rain-delayed game.
Ohio got the scoring started in the top of the first as a Mitch Longo groundout allowed a Bobcat baserunner to score from third. Then, in the top of the second, the Bobcats plated four runs on two errors and a one-run single. The RedHawks fought back in the bottom half of the inning by plating two runs on a Jacob Wolf homer over the left field wall. The four-bagger was Wolf's fourth of the season.
The Bobcats extended their lead in the top half of the fourth on a one-run single, a one-run double and a one-run triple. The RedHawks got one back in the bottom half of the frame as Ryan Elble collected his 24th RBI of the season on a sac fly. The Bobcats held an 8-3 advantage through four innings of play.
Ohio blew the game open with nine runs in the top of the seventh and held a 17-3 lead until the bottom of the ninth. Seniors Scott Slappey and Kendall Johnson refused to end their Miami career's quietly as they both earned an RBI in the frame. Slappey doubled to left center and that scored Adam Yacek. Then, Johnson singled up the middle to score Slappey. That would be all the RedHawks could muster as Ohio claimed the 17-5 victory.
Ryan Powers got the start for the RedHawks Saturday, the last of his Miami career. He took the loss for the Red & White. Other pitchers making their final appearance in a RedHawk uniform Saturday were Nathan Williams, Brian Thene, Clay Cinnamon, John Monnig and Will Schierholz.
