TOLEDO, Ohio – The RedHawks jumped in front of Toledo early Sunday, but the Rockets rallied late to earn a 6-2 victory and a series win over Miami. The loss drops Miami’s record to 12-37 record, including 10-14 in MAC action.
Miami got the game’s first runs in their opening at-bat. Ryan Elble got the inning started with a leadoff single. After a fly out, Matt Honchel singled up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error. Elble advanced to third. The next at-bat, Adam Yacek hit a fly ball to right field, deep enough for a sac fly that scored Elble. The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead into the bottom half of the first.
Toledo stranded two baserunners in both the first and second innings as Miami starter Ryan Powers was able to work out of a couple jams with a double play and a plethora of fly balls.
Miami extended their lead in the top of the fifth. Jacob Wolf led off the inning with a single to right center. After two straight outs, Jake Romano kept the inning alive with a single to center field, which was followed by a Honchel infield single that scored Wolf from third. Honchel’s hit was a liner right back to the pitcher, which went off of his leg and back towards the third base foul line. The RedHawks were holding onto a 2-0 lead through four and a half innings of play.
Toledo jumped in front, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run homer to right field. The Rockets got two more in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back sac flies to center field. UT took a 5-2 advantage into the top of the eighth.
The Rockets tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth on a solo shot over the right field wall, giving Toledo a 6-2 lead heading into the ninth.
The RedHawks got the leadoff man on but could not complete a rally, falling 6-2.
The Red & White return to the diamond Thursday as they begin a three-game set against Ohio. Be sure to come out to McKie Field at Hayden Park to support your RedHawks in the team’s last home series of the season.
