RedHawks Fall to Colonels in 11 Innings, 6-5

OXFORD, Ohio – For the fifth time in the last seven games, the RedHawks (9-33, 7-11 MAC) found themselves in a one-run game Wednesday as Eastern Kentucky edged Miami, 6-5, in 11 innings at McKie Field at Hayden Park.
EKU got the scoring started in the top of the second on a Cole Warrenfeltz two-run single to left field. Then, in the top of the third, EKU struck again as Ben Fisher cranked a two-run home run to left center and over the wall. The Colonels held a 4-0 until the top of the sixth when, with the loaded, Scott Slappey reached on an error, allowing Spencer Dull to score from third. The next at-bat, with the bases still loaded, Steve Sada earned a walk to bring Romano in to score and cut the EKU lead to 4-2.
The RedHawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Ryan Elble belted his fourth home run of the year over the left field wall, knotting the game at four apiece through seven.
Both teams earned a run in the eighth. For EKU, a Luke Wurzelbacher single allowed them to regain the lead, 5-4. Miami countered with a one-run double to right field by Max Andresen. Through eight, the score was deadlocked at five a side.
The winning came in the top of the 11th when the Colonels’ Kyle Nowlin earned a one-run single to center field, thrusting EKU ahead for good, 6-5.
Miami starter Chris Ticherich went six a third innings, surrendering just three hits and two earned runs. Will Schierholz (1-2) took the loss for the RedHawks. He tossed four innings of relief, allowing one earned run, while striking out four.
