WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Behind a fantastic final round, the Miami University golf team moved up six spots to finish in a tie for seventh at the Boilermaker Invitational. Despite a steady wind and cool temperatures, the RedHawks shot a final round score of four-over par 292 to finish at 19-over par. That was the second best round of the 15 teams participating in the event, behind eventual winner, sixth-ranked Illinois. The Illini won the tournament by 32 shots at 35-under par.
Freshman Patrick Flavin shot a one-under par 71 on Sunday to finish as Miami’s top individual golfer. He tied for 12th-overall at one-over par.
Senior Brantley Kushner shot a two-under par 70, which tied for the low round of the day by any golfer in the field. He finished the event in a tie for 22nd place at three-over par.
Senior Scott Cahill shot a 76 on Sunday and finished tied for 49th at 11-over par. After a 75, sophomore Greg Conrad was tied for 55th at 13-over par. Junior Jack Sparling rounded out the RedHawks golfers with a 78 and finished tied for 59th at 14-over par.
"We definitely showed our resiliency today after a really poor second round yesterday afternoon," said head coach Zac Zedrick. "For our best performance to come in the worst conditions we saw all week says a lot about this team's competitiveness. We have a little over a week before we head up to Sand Ridge and we're going to take advantage of it."
This was the final team event for Miami before the Mid-American Conference Championship, which is May 1-3 at the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in Chardon, Ohio. The RedHawks are sending senior Luke Shaughnessy and juniors Bud Radis, Daniel Schwarz and Bailey Truesdell to the Xavier Invitational this Monday and Tuesday to compete as individuals.
