OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team dropped a pair of low-scoring games on Saturday to Western Michigan. The Broncos took the opener, 1-0. They then scored a run in the top of the seventh to take the nightcap, 2-1. Miami is now 24-19 overall and 8-6 in the Mid-American Conference. WMU is 17-19 overall and 8-4 in the MAC.

The first game was a pitcher’s duel between Miami’s Amber Logemann and Western Michigan’s Allyson Kus. In the top of the first, the Broncos led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. Logemann struck out the third hitter, but a single to centerfield scored what turned out to be the Broncos only run of the contest.

The RedHawks best chance to score came in the bottom of the sixth. After a pair of fielding errors and a hit by pitch, Miami loaded the bases with no one out. However, Kus was able to induce a couple of groundouts and a fly out to end the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall drew a walk and was sacrificed to second with two outs. However, Kus was able to finish off the 1-0 win with another groundout.

Logemann allowed only one run on four hits in a tough-luck loss. She struck out four. Marshall and senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb each finished the game 2-for-3.

Sophomore pitcher Kelsey Fredericks was perfect through the first three innings of the nightcap. In the top of the fourth, Western Michigan got on the board with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly.

Lipscomb tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with her fifth home run of the year, a towering shot over the leftfield wall.

It remained that way until the top of the seventh. With Logemann in the circle, the Broncos drew a one out walk. After another out was recorded, the Broncos hit a double to rightfield. On the relay, the ball was thrown away allowing a run to score. In the bottom of the seventh, outfielder Tanya Busby drew a walk, but the ‘Hawks were unable to bring her home.

Lipscomb finished the game 1-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Miami returns to action on Tuesday when they host Butler for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
