Team Effort Leads Miami Over Buffalo, 6-3

OXFORD, Ohio – A big first inning helped lead the Miami RedHawks (6-24, 4-7 MAC) over Buffalo Saturday, 6-3. The Red & White scored all of the runs they needed in the top of the first, plating five in the inning.
Ryan Elble got things started right off the bat, earning a leadoff homerun over the left center field wall. Then, Jake Romano singled, which was followed by a double from Matt Honchel. Romano scored on the play. After an Adam Yacek walk and a Kendall Johnson hit by pitch, Gary Russo belted a two-run double to left center. Then, a Steve Sada groundout scored Johnson, giving the RedHawks a 5-0 advantage through one inning of play.
Buffalo answered in the top of the second. A two-run homerun over the left field wall minimized the Red & White lead to, 5-2.
Miami extended their lead in the bottom of the third. With Russo on second and two outs in the inning, Julian Flanary knocked a base hit into center field, scoring Russo and pushing the RedHawk lead to, 6-2.
The only other run of the game came in the top of the sixth, courtesy of Buffalo. A groundball double play allowed a Buffalo runner from third to score, reducing the Miami lead to 6-3.
Brad Schwartz and Will Schierholz came on in relief for Miami today, the latter earned the save, his fourth of the season. Jacob Banks got the win for the RedHawks, moving him to 2-6 on the season.
The Red & White return to action tomorrow for a rubber match against Buffalo. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
