MU in 9th at Worlds after Short Program

HAMILTON, Ontario—A powerful skate by the Miami University senior synchronized skating team jump started the RedHawks’ World Championship stint on Friday evening at the FirstOntario Center. Set to the song “The World Is Ours,” Miami attacked its short program with a clean performance to a piece that captures this moment for the Red and White and scored a 54.73 to sit in ninth place among the 25-team field heading into Saturday’s free skate competition.
Miami notched a technical element score of 24.84 and a program component score of 29.89. The RedHawks trail the eighth-place team from Sweden by 4.39 points and hold a 0.04 edge on the 10th place team from Russia.
Team Canada 1 leads the field after the short program with a score of 71.06. Team Finland 1 is close behind with a score of 70.39 to sit in second, followed by Team Sweden 1 (69.94), Team Finland 2 (69.11), Team Russia 1 (66.25), Team USA 1—the Haydenettes (65.61), Team Canada 2 (64.37) and Team Sweden 2 (59.12), respectively. Team Russia 2 sits behind Miami in 10th place with a score of 54.69 to round out the top 10. There are 25 teams representing 20 countries at the 2015 World Synchronized Skating Championships.
Miami returns to the ice for the Saturday’s free skate, which starts at 1 p.m. The RedHawks will skate in Group A, which begins at 3 p.m., MU skates 18th overall at approximately 4:20 p.m.
