SEATTLE – The Miami University softball team earned a split during day two of the Husky Classic on Saturday. The RedHawks defeated Seattle, 4-2, in the opener. They then fell to 19th-ranked Washington, 15-1, in five innings. Miami is now 8-7 on the season.
The opener against Seattle did not start off well as the similarly named Redhawks struck for two runs off two hits and an error in the top of the first off Miami starting pitcher Amber Logemann. Logemann settled down nicely from there, not allowing another run and only two more hits, while finishing with a complete game. She struck out 10.
Miami got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall hit a triple to left center. She scored easily when sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver hit a double to left to cut the RedHawk deficit to 2-1.
Miami took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb led off with a double. A single to center by freshman catcher Rylee Whispel moved her up to third. Junior Tanya Busby pinch-ran for Whispel. Freshman Kat Lee reached on a fielder’s choice. The second baseman booted the ball, allowing both Lipscomb and Busby to score to make it 3-2. One batter later, senior third baseman Remy Edwards singled, bringing home Lee and completing the scoring for the game.
Marshall finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored. McCarver, Lee and Edwards each had RBI for the RedHawks.
The Red and White struck first against Washington when Lipscomb hit her third home run on the season. It was a solo shot in the top of the second to put Miami up, 1-0. The lead would be short lived as the Huskies showed why they are a perennial contender. UW scored nine runs in the bottom of the second; added five more in the third inning and one final run in the fourth to take a 15-1 lead. The game ended after the top of the fifth inning due to the run rule.
In addition to Lipscomb, Marshall also had a hit against the Huskies.
Miami completes play at the Husky Classic on Sunday when it takes on Seattle at noon (EDT).
