SEATTLE- The Miami University softball team had a successful conclusion to the Husky Classic on Sunday with an 8-5 victory over Seattle. The RedHawks improve to 9-7 on the season, while SU falls to 7-17.
Seattle struck first with a three-run home run in the bottom of the second off MU’s starting pitcher, senior Remy Edwards. Junior Amber Logemann came in to the game in the bottom of the third in relief and would pitch the remainder of the way.
The RedHawks would quickly get even in the top of the third. With one out, sophomore third baseman Jenna Jones walked. Senior shortstop Kylie McChesney reached on a bunt single. A double to left center by senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall brought home Jones and put Miami on the board. After junior designated player Tanya Busby reached on a single, a base hit by sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver scored McChesney and Marshall and tied the score at three.
Marshall gave Miami its first lead of the game in the top of the fourth when her bases loaded single scored freshman first baseman Kaitlyn Gliha and made it 4-3.
The RedHawks broke the game open with three runs in the top of the fifth. McCarver led off with a single through the left side. Freshman catcher Rylee Whispel reached on an error. After a pitching change, junior outfielder Taylor Shuey hit a single to load the bases with no one out. Seattle retired the next batter, but an error on a Gliha grounder allowed McCarver to score. Jones followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Whispel. A McChesney single scored Shuey and gave Miami a 7-3 lead.
The RedHawks completed their scoring in the top of the sixth when a McCarver double brought home freshman Kat Lee and made it 8-3.
Meanwhile, Logemann had kept Seattle offense under control since the third inning. They finally broke through with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth that cut the Miami lead to 8-5. SU loaded the bases later on in the frame, but Logemann induced a groundout to get out of the jam. Seattle put a couple of runners on in the bottom of the seventh, Logemann got the final hitter to strike out looking to secure the win.
McCarver finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Marshall was 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored, while McChesney was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Logemann allowed two runs on five hits in five innings to earn her seventh victory of the year. She struck out seven.
Miami opens its home schedule on Wednesday when it welcomes Louisville for a 6 p.m. contest. The RedHawks will host the Miami Invitational next weekend (March 13-15) as Dayton, Detroit, North Dakota, Oakland and Robert Morris come to Oxford.
