Ice Hockey
Last Week: Missing its top two goal scorers, the RedHawks played one of the most entertaining games of the NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend. Miami jumped ahead of Providence in Providence, R.I., on first period goals by Cody Murphy and Anthony Louis, though the Friars answered each tally to tie the score at 2-2 after 20 minutes. A rough second period saw PC net four goals and dig MU into a seemingly insurmountable 6-2 hole at the end of the middle stanza. With their backs against the wall, the RedHawks began pulling their goaltender for an extra skater with just under 13 minutes left and saw that aggressive strategy pay off with 6-on-5 goals from Matthew Caito, Devin Loe and Sean Kuraly cutting the deficit to 6-5 with 1:33 remaining in regulation. Miami got a few opportunities to tie it up, but could not find a tying tally before Providence eventually sealed a 7-5 upset win away with an empty net goal (Recap). The RedHawks’ season ends with a 25-14-1 record.
Women’s Tennis
Last Week: Miami earned a pair of road wins last week, defeating Buffalo on Friday, 6-1, (Recap) and blanking Akron on Sunday, 7-0. (Recap) For the third consecutive week, a pair from Miami was named the MAC Women’s Doubles Team of the Week. Senior Christine Guerrazzi and freshman Nelli Ponomareva were awarded following their outstanding performances that led to two Miami victories against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. (Release) This Week: The RedHawks return to the road for a match against Eastern Michigan on Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. They head back to Oxford to face the Toledo Rockets on Sunday, April 5 at 1 p.m. at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts.
Men’s Track & Field
Last Week: Skyler Coburn and Tyler Gittins paced the RedHawks at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational, snagging the top-two spots in the 400m hurdles with times of 54.38 and 57.14, respectively. Miami also got a pair of fourth-place finishes from Peter Stefanski in the high jump (6-4) and Nathan Fleischer in the pole vault (14-0) (Recap). This Week: MU hosts the Miami Invitational, the first of three home track meets this month. The meet runs April 3-4.
Women’s Track & Field
Last Week: The RedHawks began their outdoor season at the North Florida Spring Break Invite over the weekend. Miami got solid performances out of its throwers, with Amelia Strickler’s shot put victory (52-7.25) headlining five top-10 finishes in that area (Recap). The southern trek concluded on Saturday with the 4x400m relay squad of Emily Hooker, Alexus Jimson-Miller, Morgan Rice and Kathie Wollney finishing their laps in 3:51.52. Jimson-Miller also individually finished third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.24 (Recap). This Week: MU hosts the Miami Invitational, the first of three home track meets this month. The meet runs April 3-4.
Baseball
Last Week: The Red & White traveled to Dayton last Wednesday to take on Wright State. The RedHawks fell to the Raiders, 7-3 (Recap). This past weekend, Miami took on Central Michigan in their Mid-American Conference home opener. The Chippewas stole all three game from the RedHawks. Friday's game saw the team get shutout, 11-0 (Recap). Saturday and Sunday saw the Red & White drop a pair of one-run games (Saturday) (Sunday). This Week: The team will travel to Louisville, Ky. to take on the Cardinals of Louisville Tuesday. Then, the 'Hawks will come home to host the Thundering Herd of Marshall on Wednesday. Following the pair of midweek games, the RedHawks will travel to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons for a three-game conference series.
Softball
Last Week: Miami (18-11 overall; 2-0 MAC) went 3-1 this week, including a perfect 2-0 start to MAC play. The RedHawks concluded their spring break road trip with a doubleheader split at Western Illinois on Monday. They dropped a 5-4, eight inning heartbreaker in the opener, but came back to take the nightcap, 5-1. (Recap) After Miami’s doubleheader at Central Michigan was canceled on Friday, so on Saturday it built a large early lead against Eastern Michigan in its Mid-American Conference opener, but the Eagles used the long ball to come from behind and send the game into extra innings. It did not matter however, as the RedHawks scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 9-7 victory. (Recap) Miami earned a series sweep of Eastern Michigan on Sunday with a 9-4 victory. (Recap) On Wednesday, senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall was named MAC East Division Player of the Week for her performance the previous week. (Release) This Week: The RedHawks return home for five games this week. Miami takes on Eastern Kentucky in a single game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The RedHawks then host Buffalo for a MAC doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. Miami faces Kent State in single games on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Golf
Last Week: Miami finished in seventh at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Freshman Patrick Flavin tied for second out of 159 total golfers. (Recap) His performance earned him MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week honors (Release) This Week: Miami is idle this week. It returns to action April 11-12 when it participates in the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana.
Men’s Basketball
Last Week: Junior guard Eric Washington was named to the NABC All-District 14 Second Team. (Release)
