Miami Knocks Off Eastern Michigan, 9-4

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Miami University softball team earned a series sweep of Eastern Michigan on Sunday with a 9-4 victory. The RedHawks improve to 18-11 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles fall to 8-18 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.
Miami got its offense going right from the start with four runs in the top of the first. Senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall led off with a triple that hit the wall in left center field. Junior designated player Tanya Busby followed with a single up the middle to score her. After an error allowed sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver to reach, Busby was retired on a fielder’s choice. Junior outfielder Taylor Shuey singled to load the bases. On the next play, senior outfielder Bree Lipscomb reached on a fielder’s choice, but the EMU shortstop threw the ball away, allowing senior first baseman Shanyn McIntyre and McCarver to score and make it 3-0. After freshman catcher Rylee Whispel walked to reload the bases, a groundout by freshman third baseman Kat Lee brought Shuey home and gave the RedHawks a 4-0 advantage.
Eastern Michigan got one back in the bottom of the first on a solo home run, but Miami answered with three more runs in the top of the second. Busby led off with an infield single to third base. McCarver moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. One batter later, a single from Shuey scored Busby to make it 5-1. Lipscomb followed with a single, while Whispel was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Lee singled up the middle to score Shuey. Senior shortstop Kylie McChesney then hit an infield single to shortstop to score Lipscomb and increase Miami’s advantage to 7-1.
The RedHawks completed their scoring with single runs in the top of the third and fourth. In each inning, Miami drew a bases loaded walk to force home a run.
Eastern Michigan scored its final two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Junior pitcher Amber Logemann came in to begin the fourth and shut out the Eagles the rest of the way to help the ‘Hawks secure their 9-4 win. She allowed only two hits in 4.0 innings pitched, while striking out three to record her 14th victory of the season.
Busby finished the game 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Lee was 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Shuey was 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Miami returns home to take on Eastern Kentucky in a non-conference single game on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on Miami All-Access for those who have a subscription.
