OXFORD, Ohio – For their performances last week hockey junior forward Riley Barber and the entire Collegiate Synchronized Skating team are Miami’s Athletes of the Week connected by Frontier Communications for the week of Feb. 23-March 1.
Barber returned to the lineup and was a force for the RedHawks in their split at No. 7 Denver. The junior contributed to Miami's first three goals of the series by posting two goals and an assist in Friday's 5-3 victory. He assisted on Sean Kuraly's goal to open the scoring and closed the first period out with a goal to stake MU to a 2-0 lead. With a 2-1 lead early in the third, Barber netted a power play goal to up its lead to two goals once again. On Saturday, Barber got a comeback bid started when he scored during a 5-on-3 to put Miami on the board as it eventually cut a 4-0 deficit in half at 4-2 after two periods. The big weekend gives Barber a team-high tying 16 goals while his 31 points are second on the RedHawks.
This is the first time this season and seventh time in his career that Barber has been named Miami’s Male Athlete of the Week. He last won it for the week of March 10-16, 2014.
Miami University’s collegiate synchronized skating team won its 11th-straight and 17th overall U.S. National Championships last weekend. Heading into the competition, Miami already owned the U.S. Figure Skating record for most consecutive national titles in any discipline at any level of skating and extended that record on Saturday. Skating to an Italian-themed program with music from the movie “Nine,” Miami put forth a dominant performance to notch a score of 94.12, besting its nearest competitor by 8.43 points to capture gold among a 12-team field.
This is the first time this season and sixth time overall that the Collegiate Synchronized Skating team has earned Miami’s Female Athlete of the Week honor.
