Hockey
Last Week: The fifth-ranked RedHawks maintained their grip on second place in the NCHC standings by splitting a weekend road series at No. 7 Denver. Four Miami skaters posted multiple points on Friday night, led by Riley Barber’s three points (2 goals, 1 assist). Sean Kuraly (1g, 1a), Alex Gacek (2g) and Anthony Louis (2a) also posted multi-point nights as MU jumped ahead 2-0 after the first period and had an answer every time DU drew within a goal in a 5-3 victory (Recap). Things took a 180 on Saturday as the Pioneers scored four times in the first period to dig the RedHawks into a 4-0 hole. Goals by Barber and Alex Wideman in the second period cut the deficit in half after 40 minutes, but DU got goals by Joey LaLeggia and Danton Heinen put the contest away in the third as Denver answered with a 6-2 win to force the split on Saturday (Recap). This Week: Miami remain in control of its destiny with regards to winning a share of the NCHC regular season conference title if it sweeps its two-game home series against first-place and No. 1 North Dakota. Friday’s series opener is nationally televised on CBS Sports Network and begins at 6:30 p.m.
Men’s Basketball
Last Week: Junior guard Eric Washington’s career-high 24 points led a furious rally that gave Miami its fourth consecutive victory in a 86-81 overtime thriller versus Kent State on Tuesday night at Millett Hall. Trailing by 19 with just over eight minutes to play, the RedHawks went on a 32-13 run to close the margin and go on to outscore the Golden Flashes 9-4 in the overtime. (Recap) The Miami men’s basketball team held Bowling Green scoreless for nearly 10 minutes to start the second half, but the Falcons rallied back to top the RedHawks 62-57 on Saturday evening. Saturday’s loss snapped the RedHawks’ winning streak at four games. (Recap) This Week: Miami rounds out the regular season hosting Akron at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 before traveling to Ohio for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, March 6.
Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (7-20 overall, 4-12 MAC) upped its winning streak to three games with a pair of home victories this week. The RedHawks used a steady offensive effort throughout the game and a shutout defensive performance over the final nine minutes to secure a 59-51 victory over Bowling Green Wednesday night. (Recap) Baleigh Reid scored a career-high 22 points to help send the Miami women’s basketball seniors out of Millett Hall on a high note in a 66-59 win over Kent State on Saturday afternoon. (Recap) (Photo Gallery) This Week: Miami hits the road for the last week of the regular season. The RedHawks travel to Akron on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip. The regular season concludes on Saturday when MU is at Ohio for the “Battle of the Bricks” at 2 p.m.
Synchronized Skating
Last Week: On the final day of the U.S. National Championships, the Miami University collegiate synchronized skating team came away with its 11th-consecutive and 17th overall national crown, while the RedHawk senior team punched a ticket to the ISU World Championships in April with a second-place finish on Saturday evening. (Recap) Miami’s junior team finished eighth among a 14-team field. (Recap) This Week: The collegiate and junior teams concluded their competitive season on Saturday, while the senior team earned a bid to represent the United States at the ISU World Championships April 10-11 in Hamilton, Ontario.
Tennis
Last Week: Miami returned to the court in excellent form as they defeated the Dayton, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Riverside Athletic Club. The RedHawks won eight matches on the day, with five singles matchups ending in straight sets. (Recap) This Week: Miami hosts Illinois State on Friday, March 6 at 11 a.m., followed by a visit from the Wisconsin Badgers on Sunday March 8 at 10 a.m.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Sophomore diver Pei Lin set a MAC Championship meet record with a score of 334.00 in the one-meter event and also won a MAC Championship in the three-meter dive. Sophomore Stephanie LeMire also won a MAC title in the 100-yard breaststroke. (Recaps: Day One, Day Two, Day Three, Day Four) This Week: Up next for Miami is the Ohio Senior Championship which runs from Friday, March 6 to Sunday, March 8 at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
This Week: Miami competes in the Mid-American Conference Championships March 5-6 in Geneva, Ohio. A portion of the team also will compete at the Ohio Senior Championships in Oxford March 6-8..
Softball
Last Week: After scheduling the tournament last minute on Monday, Miami (7-4 overall) split its four games at the Citrus Classic in Orlando this past weekend. On Friday, the RedHawks defeated Western Illinois, 7-0, in the opener, before falling to Towson, 8-4, in the nightcap. (Recap) After being rained out on Saturday, Miami fell to Mississippi State, 3-1 Sunday morning. It came back to defeat Indiana, 3-2, in the afternoon. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks head out to the Pacific Northwest and the home state of senior shortstop Kylie McChesney, as well as freshman catcher Rylee Whispel to participate in the Husky Classic in Seattle next weekend. On Friday, Miami will take on Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. (EST) and Seattle at 5:45 p.m. (EST). On Saturday, MU will face Seattle again at 1:15 p.m. (EST) and the host, 18th-ranked Washington at 8 p.m. (EST). The RedHawks complete play on Sunday with one more match against Seattle at noon (EDT).
Women’s Track and Field
Last Week: Miami finished 10th at the MAC Indoor Championships with 26 points as a team over the weekend. Friday’s competition saw the distance medley relay team post two points with a seventh-place finish Alexus Jimson-Miller qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles (Recap). Laura Bess headlined Saturday’s final competition day by winning the mile run in a time of 4:50.99, Miami’s lone individual champion. Amelia Strickler also earned Second-Team All-MAC honors with her runner-up shot put throw of 52-6.75. Other scorers were Jimson-Miller in the 60m hurdles (fourth) and Jess Hoover in the 3000m (eighth) (Recap). This Week: The indoor season is over for the RedHawks, though Strickler is a likely qualifier for the NCAA Indoor Championships as she sits ninth nationally in the shot put. The national meet qualifiers will be announced on NCAA.com on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks traveled to Buies Creek, N.C. for the Fighting Camel Classic. Miami faced host Campbell in their first matchup and were defeated, 7-2 (Recap). The Red & White bounced back Saturday against Furman in a tight one, coming out on top, 4-3 (Recap). The team was schedule to play Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday, but the game was canceled due to inclement weather. This Week: Tuesday's game against Dayton has already been canceled due to inclement weather. However, the RedHawks will travel to Columbia, S.C. this weekend for a big three-game series against the Gamecocks of South Carolina. A preview of that series will be up on MURedHawks.com on Wednesday.
