OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team dropped an 8-1 decision to Louisville on Thursday. The RedHawks fall to 13-10 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 16-7.
With a .336 team batting average entering the game, the high-powered Louisville offense struck for three runs in the top of the second and one run in the top of the third off Miami starter, junior Amber Logemann. Logemann went four innings, allowing four runs (only one of them was earned) on seven hits.
Miami got its run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman catcher Rylee Whispel led off with a single through the right side. She was pinch-ran for by sophomore Jenna Jones. A wild pitch moved Jones to second base, while a double down the leftfield line by junior outfielder Taylor Shuey scored her and cut the RedHawk deficit to 4-1.
The Cardinals would put the game away with single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth, along with two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall finished the game 2-for-3. Shuey was 1-for-2 with one RBI. Whispel and senior shortstop Kylie McChesney also had hits for Miami.
The RedHawks return to action on Sunday when they travel to Iowa State for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT).
