Ice Hockey
Last Week: The fifth-ranked RedHawks went the distance in their best-of-three NCHC Playoff series with the Western Michigan Broncos. Blake Coleman had a hand in Miami's first four goals with two goals and two assists, snapping a 3-3 tie midway through the third period as Miami opened the series with a 5-3 victory (Recap). Offense opened up even more in game two as WMU scored five times in the second period to jump out to a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes. Miami struck twice with an extra attacker to close the gap to 6-5 with 23 seconds left, but the Broncos secured the game on an empty net goal 11 seconds later to post a 7-5 win (Recap). Jay Williams was on top of his game in the series finale, making 35 saves to post his fifth shutout of the year while getting support from goals by Scott Dornbrock, Riley Barber, Austin Czarnik and a coleman empty netter to move onto Minneapolis after a 4-0 win (Recap).
This Week: Miami moves on to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis, it will open the weekend with a semifinal game against Denver.
Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (7-23 overall) battled hard, but a tough shooting night resulted in a 62-47 loss to Toledo in the Mid-American Conference First Round tournament game on Monday. (Recap) This Week: The season is complete.
Softball
Last Week: The RedHawks (11-9 overall) split two games at their home Miami Invitational this past week. Miami opened the tournament with a 5-2 victory over Oakland on Thursday. (Recap) The RedHawks gained a split on Saturday. After dropping a 1-0 pitcher’s duel against Robert Morris in their opener, the Miami offense got back on track with a 14-3 victory over Detroit in the nightcap. That game ended after five innings due to the run-rule. (Recap) It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel through six innings between the Miami University softball team and Dayton on Sunday, but in the end the Flyers were able to come away with 5-2, eight inning win. (Recap) This Week: Miami hosts North Dakota for a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 5 p.m. The RedHawks then welcome Louisville for a single game on Thursday at 4 p.m. MU travels to Iowa State for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT).
Women's Track & Field
Last week: Amelia Strickler stepped onto the big stage at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships over the weekend. The junior thrower ended up finishing 15th in the shot put with a high mark of 51-3.75 (Recap).
This Week: Miami's idle until its outdoor season begins on March 27.
Golf
Last Week: Miami finished in second place at the Colleton River Collegiate on Tuesday. Freshman Patrick Flavin and junior Jack Sparling finished in the top-ten individually. (Recap) The RedHawks are tied for 11th after two rounds at the Talis Park Challenge. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks complete play at the Talis Park Challenge with one final round of 18 holes on Monday. Miami begins play at the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Virginia on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
Last Week: Miami split a pair of matches last weekend. The RedHawks built a commanding lead but were not able to hang on as they were edged 4-3 by No. 74 Marshall in a four-hour match at the Huntington Tennis Center last Friday. (Recap) Miami rebounded with a 6-1 victory over the Winthrop Eagles Saturday afternoon at the Huntington Tennis Center. The win marked Miami’s final non-conference contest of the season. (Recap) Last week, senior Ramona Costea and sophomore Andreea Badileanu were named the Mid-American Conference Tennis Doubles Team of the Week for the week of March 2-8. (Release) This Week: The RedHawks will now return to Oxford for their MAC opener and tentatively, their 2015 debut at the Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts. They will face Western Michigan on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m. and the Northern Illinois Huskies on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the matches will be moved to the Riverside Athletic Club in Hamilton.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
Last Week: Juniors Michael Nash and Cole Fryman competed at the Zone C Diving Championships. (Thursday Recap, Friday Recap) This Week: RedHawk swimmers who made the cut will travel to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the NCAA Championships beginning March 26.
Women's Swimming
Last Week: Sophomore diver Pei Lin won both the women's one-meter dive and three-meter event at the Zone C Diving Championships. She advances to the NCAA Championships. Lin brok her own school record in the three-meter dive. Spohomores Jenna Karrow and Taylor LeCount also competed at the event. (Thursday Recap, Friday Recap) Up Next: The Women’s NCAA Championships are from Thursday, March 19 to Saturday, March 21 in Greensboro, N.C.
