OXFORD, Ohio – It was a scoreless pitcher’s duel through six innings between the Miami University softball team and Dayton on Sunday, but in the end the Flyers were able to come away with 5-2, eight inning win. The game was the final contest of the Miami Invitational. The RedHawks fall to 11-9 on the season, while Dayton improves to 12-9.
Miami’s Amber Logemann and the Flyers’ Gabrielle Snyder matched each other pitch for pitch during the first six innings. Logemann allowed only one hit through the first six as no Dayton runner was able to get past second base. The RedHawks had one major threat in the bottom of the third. With one out, senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall doubled to left field. A single to shortstop by junior outfielder Tanya Busby moved Marshall up to third, but Miami was not able to bring her home.
In the top of the seventh, Dayton led off with a single and followed with a double to score the game’s first run.
Miami did not give up as it was able to answer in the bottom of the seventh. Junior outfielder Taylor Shuey led off with a walk. After the Flyers recorded an out, senior designated player Shanyn McIntyre blasted a shot to centerfield that scooted past the centerfielder for a triple. Shuey scored on the play to tie the score at one and send the game into extra innings.
The eighth inning was played using the international tiebreaker, meaning a runner was placed on second base to begin the frame. In the top of the inning, Miami recorded two outs immediately, but an error and two hits allowed the Flyers to score four runs and take a 5-1 lead.
Senior shortstop Kylie McChesney was placed on second base to begin the bottom of the eighth. Marshall moved her over to third on a bunt. Busby reached on a field error, which allowed McChesney to score to make it 5-2. Sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver was hit by a pitch to put two runners on, but the RedHawks next two hitters were retired as Dayton took the victory.
McIntyre finished the game 1-for-1 with one RBI, while McChesney and Shuey scored runs for the ‘Hawks. Logemann threw 7.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out nine.
Miami returns to action on Monday when it hosts North Dakota for a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
