OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami University softball team opened up its home Miami Invitational with a 5-2 victory over Oakland on Thursday. The RedHawks improve to 10-7 on the season, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 8-10.
Miami had its offense going right from the beginning of the game as it scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Senior outfielder Tiyona Marshall led off with a single to short. She stole second and advanced to third when junior outfielder Tanya Busby reached on an error. Sophomore second baseman Eryn McCarver grounded out to second base, allowing Marshall to come around and score. Freshman catcher Rylee Whispel followed with a double to right center, scoring Busby and putting the RedHawks in front, 2-0.
Oakland got one back off Miami’s senior starting pitcher, Remy Edwards, in the top of the second. Edwards settled down from there, keeping the Golden Grizzlies off the board until the sixth.
Miami broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and one out, McCarver singled to center field, scoring Marshall and senior shortstop Kylie McChesney to put the ‘Hawks 4-1. Whispel followed with a single to left center to bring home McCarver and complete Miami’s scoring.
Oakland got one back in the top of the sixth. Junior pitcher Amber Logemann came into the game in the top of the seventh and retired the Golden Grizzlies in order, striking out two, to earn her first save of the season.
McCarver finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Whispel was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Edwards earned her third victory of the season, allowing two runs on six hits.
The RedHawks return to action on Saturday with two games at the Miami Invitational. The ‘Hawks take on Robert Morris at 4:45 p.m. and Detroit at 7 p.m.
