Hockey
Last Week: The No. 6 Miami RedHawks split a weekend series against No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, putting themselves in sole possession of second place in the NCHC standings with four games remaining in the regular season. After each team scored 50 seconds apart midway through the first period, UMD used two power play goals in the third period to pull out a 3-1 series opening win on Friday night (Recap). The Bulldogs went up 2-0 early in the second period until Anthony Louis put the Red and White on the board midway through the frame. The Bulldogs used another power play goal to go up 3-1, but the RedHawks got a goal right before the second intermission from Matthew Caito before Sean Kuraly evened it up at 3-3 on the power play early in the third to force overtime. With 1:02 left in the extra session, Blake Coleman finished a nifty feed from Louis on a 2-on-1 to give the RedHawks a 4-3 victory (Recap). This Week: Miami heads west for its final road games of the regular season when it takes on Denver for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday.
Men’s Basketball
Last Week: Picking up two big road wins, Miami extended its win streak to three straight as it heads into a three-game home stretch. A strong defensive effort that held the Falcons to 23-second half points helped propel Miami to 67-56 upset at then-Mid-American Conference leader Bowling Green on Wednesday evening at the Stroh Center. Sophomore guard Jaryd Eustace sparked an 11-0 second-half run that put Miami on top for good. Eustace led all RedHawks with 14 points. Junior guard Geovonie McKnight notched his first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. (Recap) In a gritty, hard-fought battle, Miami picked up a thrilling 57-52 overtime win at Akron on Saturday evening. The win snapped an 11-game losing skid at James A. Rhodes Arena for the RedHawks. Junior guard Eric Washington led all players with 21 points and added five assists. (Recap) This Week: Miami returns home for three straight games, beginning with a 7 p.m. game against MAC leader Kent State on Tuesday, Feb. 24. The King’s Firecrackers Jump Rope Group will perform at halftime of Tuesday’s game. Tuesday’s game is also Flashback to the ‘90s Night at Millett Hall. On Saturday, Feb. 28, the RedHawks host the Bowling Green Falcons at 3:30 p.m. in the second game of a doubleheader with the Miami women tipping off at 1 p.m.
Women’s Basketball
Last Week: Miami (5-20 overall, 2-12 MAC) had a pair of strong performances as it split its two games last week. On Tuesday, Miami jumped to an early lead, and after falling behind, it nearly finished off a spirited comeback. The RedHawks last couple of attempts to hit the tying three-pointer fell short however, as Eastern Michigan took a 54-51 victory. (Recap) (Photo Gallery) Miami used its most complete offensive effort of the season to down Buffalo, 78-68, Saturday afternoon in Buffalo. (Recap) This Week: The RedHawks have their final two homes of the season this week. On Wednesday, Miami welcomes Bowling Green to Millett Hall for a 7 p.m. contest. That is the final Dollar Days game of the season and admission is only $1 with select concession items only $2. On Saturday, the Red and White welcome Kent State for Senior Day at 1 p.m. That is part of a doubleheader that will see the men’s team take on Bowling Green at 3:30 p.m.
Synchronized Skating
This Week: All three teams head to the U.S. National Championships Feb. 26-28 in Providence, R.I.
Men’s Track and Field
Last Week: The RedHawks competed in their second and final indoor meet of the year at the Ohio State Tune-Up. Peter Stefanski made his season debut by winning the high jump after clearing 6-7. Other top-three finishers at the meet were Andrew Dusing in the 800m (2nd; 1:53.67), Sam Chester in the 60m hurdles (3rd; 8.27) and Zack McBride in the 3000m (3rd; 8:34.56) (Recap). This Week: Miami opens up its outdoor season at the Wake Forest Invitational on March 20.
Women’s Track and Field
Last Week: The RedHawks also traveled to Columbus for the Ohio State Tune-Up in their final preparations for next weekend’s MAC Indoor Championships. Miami took seventh in the team standings and its performance was highlighted by Jess Baker’s winning high jump of 5-6. Other top-10 finishers among the Red and White were Alexus Jimson-Miller in the 60m hurdles (5th; 8.54), Briah Owens in the 60m (10th; 7.914), Aryelle Player in the 500m (8th; 1:01.58), Alesha Vovk in the mile run (8th; 5:22), Sarra Starrett in the 3000m (8th; 10:26.17), Hope Turner in the pole vault (4th; 11-9.75) and Ashley Frahm in the shot put (6th; 44-3.25) (Recap). This Week: Miami heads to Mt. Pleasant, Mich., for the MAC Indoor Championships.
Women’s Swimming and Diving:
This Week: The RedHawks head to the Mid-American Conference Championships Feb. 25-28 hosted by Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Softball
Last Week: Miami (5-2 overall) saw the Tiger Classic canceled due to the poor weather this past week and was idle. This Week: The RedHawks have had their home opener scheduled for Feb. 25 postponed due to cold temperatures. The game against Eastern Kentucky will be made up on Tuesday, March 31. Miami is scheduled to return to action March 6-8 for the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, but keep checking with MURedHawks.com for potential schedule additions.
Baseball
Last Week: The RedHawks (1-4, 0-0 MAC) traveled to Spartanburg, S.C. for a three-game set. On Friday, the Red & White earned their first victory of the season, 9-0 over USC Upstate (Recap). A doubleheader on Saturday saw Miami drop back-to-back games to UNC-Asheville, 5-3, and Wofford, 7-4 (Recap). This Week: The team travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for the Fighting Camel Classic. The 'Hawks will play Campbell (Friday), Furman (Saturday) and Maryland-East Shore (Sunday). A full preview of the upcoming weekend's games will be on MURedHawks.com on Wednesday.
